Default Still confused, runing ps1 games on ps2.

Ok, so after trying all day, and wasting about 10 dvds(and yes, that is quite a bit of money for me...) I still can't get Metal Gear Solid(which is the game I decided to start with) to work on my ps2. Can you guys please help me and tell me what I'm missing?!!?

Here's what I've done so far:

    1. Took MGS v 1.1.bin(think this is the ntsc one, but I olso tried a pal version, same result).
    2. Transformed it from a cd/bin to a dvd/iso using UltraISO by following this guide -----
    3. Took the resulting iso and used ESR disc patcher on it. The program stated it patched it succesfully.
    4. Took the patched iso and burned it to a dvd using imageburn by following this guide http://www.epforums.org/showthread.p...s-with-ImgBurn
    5. Took the dvd and inserted it into my soft modded ps2(freemcboot v 1.8 on a card) and waited for the game to start.
    6. All I got was a pink screen after the ESR logo...

Seriously, what am I doing wrong?! I can't keep going at this rate 10 dvds for 1 game(final fantasy x-2 is the only working dvd I made) is a lot of money for me!... I don't want to use swap tricks, and I don't want to run the games from an usb in a emulator that can barely run half the games I'm interested in(and even those with bugs...).
Pretty please, what are my options?

P.S. On another note, how do I save these games?! That final fantasy game, the only dvd I got working, I played a bit of it, when I was done I tried for 30 mins(way longer then I actually played it) to return to the main menu so I could save my progress before taking the disc out. Found absolutely no way of doing that...

If I'm not mistaken it's a CD game and that's why since you're burning it to DVD. There is a way to convert though.

You can't run PS1 games that way on softmod PS2 afaik.
I mean you can't convert PS1 games to DVD then ESR patch, that method is for PS2 CD based games.

Some modchips (hardmod) can run PS1 and PS2 CD based games that are burned.

I thought the ps2 was supposed to be backwards compatible with ps1 games, why doesn't that hold true for soft modded ones too??

I don't know about soft mods, I think that there was some kind of ELF program that let you boot PS1 CD-s (backups, of course).
But, in my case my PS2 doesnt like all CD-R media. When I burned copies to Verbatim's or a cheaper media (Aolin, which btw. my PS1 likes better then Philips - It can't read Philips CD-Rs) It just made a 4-ticking noise and it would make a scratch-ring about 1 cm at the begginning.
But when i burned the same image to a Philips CD-R it would work straight-away

The point is, you should burn PS1 images to CD-Rs and not DVDs.

OK some really confused memebers here so I will explain things

ESR is only for PS2 software it does not work with PS1 software

The PS2 runs in two modes, PSX only mode and PS2 only mode, ESR runs in PS2 mode only

ESR itself does not require a slide card (FAT PS2) or the lid to be tricked into thinking it's closed all the time (Slim PS2)

PSX Launcher (take a guess what that is used for )

The above requires the a slide card (FAT PS2) or the lid to be tricked into thinking it's closed all the time (Slim PS2) [I made an external switch on the front lid switch and blocked the back one totally allowing me to switch between the PS2 thinking the lid is closed even when open and the PS2's lid working as it originally did (the disc will stop when the lid is open)]

You require an original PSX disc to take advantage of PSX Launcher

Set the PS2 up not to autoboot, can be done via ESR
Boot the PS2 up with the original PSX game inserted
    Load PSX Launcher
    follow the on screen instructions
it will tell you what to press and when to change discs to the backup

Basically PSX Launcher allows you to do a swap trick but in a safe way as the drive will stop giving you the chance to change discs in a safe way

You are not going to be able to play Metal Gear Solid this way because of the swop/swap point during the game, only multi disc games like Final Fantasy VII can work because they let you create a start of disc 2 save while still on disc 1 so you can turn the machine off then boot Disc 2 and load that save up, Metal Gear Solid has no options like that

The only way you can get onto disc 2 for Metal Gear solid is to play it another way and copy the save data to the PS2 then to a PSone memcard and that is not even close to as easy as it sounds

Last note you do require a PSX memcard for PSX games to save onto, a PS2 memcard can't be used for PSX games to save directly onto, the PS2 memcard can only be used to backup saves from a PSX Memcard to the PS2 memcard, but then that is all it is, a backup, that in order to use must be restored to a PSX memcard

Lols at not being able to save, you save during play, via the in game menu Triangle I think it is, normally you can save at any wilderness location in FF games

Also please watch your language and or cross reference to religion or anything else that may be found offensive by some

It is backwards compatible. You can play retail PS1 games on it.
If you want to play PS1 backups then you'll have to investigate that, but it isn't a matter of just converting to DVD and esr patch like PS2 CD based games.
I never bothered using PS1 backups on PS2 myself, just used the console the games were intended for.

Hmm seems you have an olde FAT PS2 ok best bet for PSX is to either get yourself a PSX with a mod chip pre installed or buy an Xbox and soft mod it, if you can't find one pre modded, otherwise for PSX games you will end up using a Slide Card with the FAT PS2, that although works, it is a bit of a fiddle to do just to play a PSX game.

soft mod options for the PSX = swap trick of some kind that = Metal Gear solid not working so it needs to be a mod chip, same applies to the PS2 if you want to run PSX games from CD

The Xbox is a beast though, the PSX emulation on it is top notch and plays most games perfect, as a bonus it plays xbox games you can either give the xbox a large sized drive (comes with 8GB, I went for a 750GB HDD replacement) or you can play from disc but 90% of xbox issues are due to the CD/DVD drive and games load times are much faster from HDD, myself I also use a PS2 pad to Xbox converter as I don't like the xbox pads, overall the console is well worth it, even the multi console released games are usually better on the xbox than the PS2, though the PS2 has way more exclusives, but having both, you get the best of both worlds .

Other options include PSP via Pops that is an official PSX emulator for the PSP and the PSP is very very easy to mod via software, with the bonus of PSP games added

Dreamcast has 3 versions of Bleem!Cast for 3 games including Metal Gear Solid, it even plays those at double the res with enhancements

PC plenty of emulators for PC including ePSXe (You can use a PSX/PS2 to USB converter to use your PS2 pad with a PC also known as a PS2 Pad to PS3 converter (it's still a PSX/PS2 pad to USB converter))

Phones (Not something I would personally use) but there are a couple of PSX emulator ports for Phones including ePSXe

There are plenty of otrher options I just went through a few of the commonly known ones

Sigh, so basically I guess I just have to wait till xmas so I can buy a ps1 too... Thanks for the ample explanations, they do make things clearer.
Hehe, I love how you say watch your language, yet one of the very first smilleys is ...... , I olso like these 2 ....., haha. As for religion I have no idea how you think I got into that.... And this whole political correctness thing is soooooooo out of control anyway, if someone is easily offended he's the one that should get out, it shouldn't be the rest of the world that has to suffer because of it.
But anyway yeah, I'll try to be more carefull, those brats(can I say that?) are not worth getting banned for.

there are other sections that are more open to whatever (e.g. the Free4All sections) but not in help sections

that is the biggest problem people are... whats that word ignorant.

Getting an Xbox is perhaps a better way, no laser strain issues ect and higher res graphics with filters, but if you do go for a PSX with a mod chip make sure the machine is in good working order first, also not all mod chips can bypass protection in some PSX games
