I would try using a 4 port powered hub. Don't use a hub with more than 4 ports.
Has the original PS3 controller been desynced at some stage? (was used on or just charged via a pc?)

He had been using a corded Gamestop branded "ps3" usb controller as far as I know. It was a ps3 controller in that it had a home button.

I'm going to give resetting it a whirl again, and if that doesn't help I'll try your port hub idea.
