I frequently see doom and gloom articles for Ninendo, and yet, the one thing that has been seen is Nintendo surviving, if not outright thriving. Nintendo has a lot of money in the bank; so even if the wii u fails, you can bet there will be another console from them.
Usually one can expect larger sales around the release of the newest mario or zelda, or Super Smash Bros. These are the big console sellers for Nintendo most of the time. The only time it wasn't was with the wii when "Wii Sports" was their biggest console sellers. Thing is, the anti-nintendo crowd really wants Nintendo gone, and so I get a kick out of seeing them rage when Nintendo actually does pretty well. Ninty probably won't be on top this gen, like they were last gen (while I believe the quality of their console was inferior and got many good games that just wouldn't be as good on the wii, I am referring to sales). I suspect Sony will do the best this gen actually, but I don't see Nintendo as doing poorly. Actually I can see Sony or Microsoft facing trouble before Nintendo. I've read articles talking about the debt Sony is in and how their credit ratings were being dropped. Fortunately for them, their videogame branch is actually one of their better branches, but it gets somewhat canceled out by their failed ventures. If Nintendo's Wii U is a flop, then Microsoft's Xbox One is even worse. There were so many fails before launch, and there is word that the NSA had at at least planned to use the Kinect camera to spy on users like they have done with other webcams. Of course, this is all opinion.
Anyweay, when it comes to innovation, Nintendo is the only ones really trying new things. Sony is the safe company, the ps4 is really just a ps3-2, which was really just a ps2-2. Aside from graphics, almost everything they can do on ps4 can be done on ps2, it just won't look as pretty. Same for Xbox 1, though Microsoft forces the user to buy the kinect with it (since there isn't a kinect-less model), for the most part, you use traditional controls. The gamer fanbase can be so indecisive sometimes. They want innovation, but choose to buy the same thing over and over. Even when it comes to just the games, the innovative games get left behind for the call of duties and the final fantasies. Nintendo, at least with their hardware tries all kinds of things. Yeah, some tend to be flops, but I think they at least get an A for effort. I didn't like the Wii remote, it was uncomfortable, and at times unresponsive. Remotes don't make good controllers imo. The Wii U gamepad is much better imo. I love my DS and 3DS, the touchscreens on them are a much better way to play games than motion controls. The gamepad is an extension of that. Developers have shown themselves better able to incorporate a touchscreen than motion controls without resorting to simple gimmicks. Nintendo is still king though when it comes to incorporating new features. I found the touchscreen very responsive and that it added to the game rather than detract when I played Windwaker HD.
