Man, the shitstorm has reached new levels:

People on the Kickstarter page are also demanding refunds, the entirety of reddit is raging hard, etc.

I had to take a break from reddit yesterday. Between the IRS classifying Bitcoin as property and Facebook buying Oculus Rift, I felt like I was reading the same story fifty different times.

I was never interested in VR tech, so I really have no opinion here. We'll see how this all plays out. I hope the Internet explodes.

Well, let's see. I sure hope Facebook won't be too intrusive, but really I don't think I was gonna buy a Rift anytime soon. Also, they donated money to the Kickstarter really and don't think they will give a refund that easily.
    Still, it's Reddit being Reddit.

They donated money to give the company enough capital to operate while in the development phase. They did not purchase shares of the company or the likesand do not own any party of the company. Had they donated enough they would have basically just preordered the device, and I have heard that those have been delivered. While Facebook buying the company isn't ideal in my own world, how can I fault the group for selling out? $2 billion is thousands times more than most see in a lifetime.

If I was one of them I probably would have done the same thing.

A lot of people like to jump on the "Fuck Facebook" wagon, and given FB's track record, I don't entirely blame them. However, this visceral reaction was simply to a purchase of the company, and a few comments by Zuckerberg about how he was interested in the social aspects of such a device. I know a lot of the Kickstarter supporters are talking about how they were betrayed -- the creator had basically said "I am in this in the long haul and have no intentions of selling out" -- but like Josh said, they got exactly what they were pledging money towards. Where the product/company went beyond that was has absolutely nothing to do with the Kickstarter.

The biggest question at this point is, "what is Facebook going to do with this?" If they try to force FB account interaction, focus only on the social or casual gaming market, and don't allow or make it difficult for gaming developers to develop and produce games for the thing, then they are going to destroy it. If they attempt to maintain at least some of the gaming standards and interest that there currently are for the game -- and I'm hoping that they will, and I have a feeling that John Carmack still working on the project will help this in the long run -- then I think they'll be fine. FB must know that their plain-jane website won't be around forever, and they need to invest in something radical for the future, and get there before all of their competitors do.

I'll keep my eyes on what happens, but I have a feeling it's not going to be as apocalypsy as most people are saying right now. And if it is, then I guess all hopes are going to have to rely on Sony's Project Morpheus for now, and hope that VR doesn't become a novelty fad.

I have a hard time taking people seriously when they preach idealism of character when discussing these acquisitions. "If I was him, I would never sell out like that! No amount of money would get me to give up!" Well, okay, come back when you've been offered $2 billion dollars. That is a mind-boggling huge number. I would cut off both of my goddamn legs and arms for $2 billion if it was offered to me.

Yeah well they haven't really done anything yet, so the raging is a bit premature. Also, lol at people seriously thinking you'd need a FB account to use a VR headset...

Btw if anyone cares, here's a couple of responses from the man himself: http://www.reddit.com/user/palmerluckey

What's Visceral done that's worth a shit? Dead Space 1 is about the only thing I can think of that was really good.

Flava you shut your dirty whore mouth! Amy Hennig was the writer for most of the Legacy of Kain series (SR, SR2, Defiance) and she even managed to connect the turd that is Blood Omen 2 to the storyline in a way that makes sense. She is absolutely one of the best writers in the industry.

But now she's gonna work on Star Wars games? What a waste...

I never got into the Kain games, so kiss off buddy
All I'm saying is the real writing talent is still at ND, so I don't think there's anything to worry about.

And it is a waste that she'll work on Star Wars games - but then again Star Wars being under the EA label isn't exactly a thrilling prospect to begin with.

You need to give them a shot again I think. Time travel story that is good and makes sense is a rare find I'd say!

Agreed. Speaking of EA how is that third turd award coming along?

I think Comcast actually beat them this year for the turd award. EA is a truly awful/evil company, but in all fairness there are much worse companies out there
