Do you really like Win8? I'm not a big fan. I have 7 on my laptop and 8 came with my desktop.... I find that I barely even use the desktop.
The actual PC my mum bought me came with ME, to be fair, I would commend that OS for giving me the kickstart in all things technical which lead me to the career and profession I have today. Not many 11 year olds know how to format their system every 5 minutes because shit hit the fan. Eventually I got a pirated Win 2K and ran that instead after a few months of tearing my balls off (that hadn't even dropped yet ) with ME.

Windows 8 is pretty sweet, it's rapid compared to Win7. The only gripe I had was with the start menu, but Start8 easily fixes that. File copying, boot up time, responsiveness and general navigation speed are much better than Win7. If they could just ditch that metro shit altogether then people would stop bitching about Win8 and jump on it. Unfortunately, it had a bad reputation due to the ineptitude of Microsoft and I don't blame anyone from staying away.

If I had a reason to I'd give 8 a proper go. I was one of the few people still using Vista when everyone else stuck with XP!

I wasn't crazy about Vista either.... I luckily avoided it - I hung on to XP through the Vista years until I got the new laptop.
My favorite is probably Win2K though - that's the one OS I don't ever remember having many issues with, whether it was networking, gaming or whatever..... that shit was solid.

Back in 2007 I built a machine for 2000 quid (yeah I was a rich cunt) and decided to purchase an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate with it. The problem was, my Intel Core2 Quad 6600 and 4GB RAM, 8800GTX SLI etc ran like fucking treacle coated cum compared to my older machine that had XP. Sadly, the XP drivers were pretty much non-existent for that hardware at the time. So therefore I wasted a shit load of money on a load of shite, and that's why I hate Vista. By the time Win7 came out, I had already upgraded again.

Win2k was the only system I had which never crashed during normal usage. Except, when I tried to run any games (all designed for Win9x) the whole thing fell over like a house of cards.

I haven't had a desktop PC for more than 3 years, I'm on a laptop nowadays because I'm an old cunt. But Win 8.1 runs like a fucking dream on here, I couldn't even consider going back to that slow, bloated POS called Win7. And I loved Win7 before.

I guess I didn't play a whole lot of games at that time - I just remember emulators worked well (TG16, NES and NeoRage), and the newer PC games like Max Payne seemed to work just fine.
I've not upgraded to win 8.1 yet... does it do much or not? I keep seeing the little reminder telling me to download it, but I've been ignoring it

Except for the fact that the 8.1 upgrade process is about as seemless as a kick in the balls, I would say it's worth doing. It brings back some of the shit that was dumped from Win8 and overall responsiveness is much improved. I would recommend doing a system restore before upgrading to 8.1 and once you got everything sorted, create a system image so you don't have to go through that tedious process anymore. I haven't used any of the metro start menu or apps whatsoever and never intend to.

I might have to give it a shot then. I really don't have much on the system anyway - I got it in October and it pretty much just sits there, so I'm not too worried about losing anything meaningful.

Yeah, go for it, nothing to lose. Make sure you ain't got no shit on the C: drive and take the plunge. There is a Win 8.1.1 coming in a few days and again, that addresses most outstanding issues. But seriously, after it's done, create a system image. You won't ever want to go through the bullshit update process ever again. It's like stabbing yourself in the eyes with rusty knives. If you need any help in that regard, just let me know.

Nevermind - I figured it out. I have the hardest time navigating Win8, I swear. I'll make an image then I'll install 8.1

Depends if you're talking Win8 or Win8.1 because they fucked around with all the menus. Assuming you have upgraded to Win8.1 already, go to Control Panel > File History > System Image Backup (in the bottom left of the screen)

Make sure you have an external HDD or whatever plugged in, you'll need about 30GB of space. Once you create the image, it'll be an exact copy of your C: drive, including your installed apps, My Docs, all your tweaks, etc etc. Everything you have done will be saved forever.

To restore it, you can do it one of two ways. Inside Windows you can go to PC Settings (yeah the metro one, you can't restore from desktop mode!) and go to Update and Recovery and click Restart Now on Advanced Startup. From there it will reboot into recovery and you can can choose Advanced and restore from system image. As long as the external HDD is plugged in you can restore your image exactly how it was when you saved it.

The best thing about Win8.1 which you couldn't do in any previous version is that you can create a recovery USB drive. So if everything fucks up, you can insert the USB, boot from it and then it will bring you to the advanced startup screen, the same as if you were to reboot in recovery mode.

You can follow the instructions here on how to do that (highly recommended)
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-sg/w...recovery-drive

Once your image is made and you have a recovery USB, nothing will ever fuck you up again, whether you change HDD or whatever, you can revert your system back to exactly how you want it. For example I have steam installed to my Drive with all games also on that drive. If I do a restore, all my games are still installed with all their dependencies already available inside the backed up image so I don't have to mess around with anything.

Create a system image after updating. If you create one now, you'll still be stuck on Win8 image and won't have gained anything. Seriously, the 8.1 upgrade takes fucking hours. It also doesn't accept Win8 keys or whatever so once 8.1 has finished installing, that's the time to create the image.
