I've finally settled on a build order so I don't have to spend a stupid amount of time in the shop thinking. So far my purchase order has been something like:

*Usually don't get a chance to do all three of these.

You'd be surprised. We have a stereotype in the west about Japanese TV all being weird or crazy due to limited exposure to what is generally a hand-picked selection of the weirder things and a big language / culture gap, but learn the language and you'll quickly find that the vast majority of it is... uh... pretty much like western TV. :'D Some of it is interesting and informative, some of it is funny, some of it is just brutally mundane... The presentation of it tends to be a little different, but the subject matter is more or less the same.

Good luck with your project, though~! Starting to learn from native level materials as early as you can is a good idea, even if you don't understand much. Exposure is important~~
