Well they don't work for about 4 months of the year due to summer and holidays. So 4x4=16. 52-16 is 36 weeks. 36 x 40 is 1440 hours x 28 = $40,320 of gross pay. Yeah that's too high

I believe they actually have other obligations to fulfill during those times though, don't they?

Not unless they do summer classes or summer sessions. They might go back a few weeks in advance before the year to get things organized and stay a week or two after school to get grades organized or pack up stuff.

That isn't much, considering tax has to be taken out.
Not really low income, but even working in many factories you could earn a lot more...but then you would probably be doing 12 hour shifts and hardly have any holidays

Well according to this average starting salary was $35,672 a few years ago. Now for the higher ones, such as NY, California, New Jersey and such, factor in the cost of living there, and the average would drop more.

I wasn't questioning if it was accurate/correct or whatever, just saying that isn't good pay.
Yeah, teachers may get good holidays...but they do have to assess stuff outside school hours, organise crap for classes and all. They don't get paid for that.

Really, it's not a good field to work in imo. Unless you're really keen about making a difference educating (or attempting to anyway) kids.
Of course private schools will pay above award, but are generally more picky about their teachers.

No idea what your tax is like there but a gross 40k job should really lose around 10%
