If it's an hardware issue, I don't think Sony will let it slide, probably making a "slim" right now just for such an occasion. I think it'd be software though, a hardware issue most likely would've been addressed before shelling it to the world.

There has been times where Nintendo fucked up consoles, N64 expansion pack is one example. The first game to incorporate the damn thing wasn't originally planned for it, it was only bundled to make the darn thing playable. I heard they got fucked early on for that one.
