So far only Chapter 1 has been translated, there's a partial patch (Google for it). I'm in Chapter 3 right now and enjoying the fuck out of it. Story itself is nothing special so far, but the characters and setting is great.

Are you familiar with any visual novels in which you pursue the less-fairer half? Looking for the GF of course.
She will only watch and finish an anime if there is romance, so I can imagine her enjoying a visual novel.

You mean otome games? I don't play them myself, but I've known (aka read the blog of) a couple of girls that do... but those are in Japanese and I'm assuming you want translated ones. Hakouki is one name I tend to hear quite often, it's been translated to English for the PSP. http://vndb.org/v1715
