I guess it might a cultural thing but there's something I find very surreal about American TV channels in general. I vividly remember one channel showing Aliens in the middle of the afternoon with violence and gore intact but all those naughty unwholesome words edited out. I still haven't quite wrapped my head around the logic of that one.

I think the news channels were by far the worst though. Hopefully they're better for you guys in Canada but I gave up on all the US run networks and just watched Al Jazeera when I wanted any sort of sensible reporting.

I find that Canadian commercials are slightly more tolerable and reasonable (except for local stuff, which I think is just horrible everywhere), but the amount of them in a show is about the same. Maybe a bit less, but not noticeably. We also have different standards for what is allowed to be showed in commercials here, so they're more pleasant and stereotypically Canadian.

As for what makes it on the air... yeah, we really do have a rather puritan culture when it comes to sex and language, but really aren't bothered by violence. I really have no idea why. I like to think Canadians aren't as uptight about it, but that's probably just a personal bias.
