Anyone know any way to fix the boot sector on a hard drive. This thing is driving me nuts. I can load up fine if I boot up from the usb key and the drive seems to be running a little slower than normal too. I know the hard drive is fucked but can't really afford a new one right now (gonna keep an eye for used but ) it's a 2.5" IDE of all things and they seem to be more expensive than a sata that has 5 times the space. Maybe some magical software or something? I think I'm really just boned but thought I'd ask.

You might be able to fix it.
Is that a netbook (no optical drive) with XP?

Nah it's a full laptop - but yeah XP. It's the one I bought off Drag a couple years ago. It's been through a lot.

I may actually get a netbook this Christmas, just have to make this last til then.

Use the Recovery Console on the XP installation disc: Repair the file system boot sector or the master boot record (MBR).

Believe me that's the first thing I tried

I even had those crazy hal and kernell dll errrors but think I've taken care of those at least. When I boot up without the stick it gives me a slightly different error message when I go to log in stating that their isn't enough system resources as well Which is silly because as far as I can tell everything else checks out like the RAM and GPU etc..

    That was random

Ok I'll bite - was it a Hummingbird or just an app for a phone?

You could try marking and isolating potential bad sectors on your HDD. But I've only ever done that via a low level format + clean install.

Really your HDD might be kaput...or is it a MBR virus? idk

I'd just go for a clean slate if it was me.

Yeah I eventually did do a full format. Tried lots of things so far actually. I mean I don't mind loading up with the stick really as it will just be for a few more months. What's more annoying is the slowness of the drive.

Actually DL isolating the bad sectors is a good idea. I assumed it does this automatically but it is an old drive, hmmm. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow. Even if it screws up what I've installed so far it doesn't matter.
