They want the DRM back because of the Family Sharing that came with it. You can pick 10 people (doesn't matter who) and share all of your digital games with them. The only caveat was that both couldn't be playing the game at the same time. That's a pretty awesome feature, and was the main reason the DRM was so restrictive and why the console had to check in every day -- to avoid abuse of the system.

What a cocktease.
The smart thing to do would be to implement DRM on digital titles only or make it entirely optional at purchase. That way the share account stuff works and the people who are shunning the fuck out of digital only titles get to keep their stuff. And those of us with discs don't have to deal with this shit. Meanwhile people who download can opt out of the program entirely (just tie it to Gold or something) and wind up with a non shareable, non transferable copy of the game that doesn't have restrictions up the ass. But if you want to share a game with a couple friends and all that jazz, purchase the game with "cloud sharing" or whatever (and maybe shove a little fee on top of it) and everything's kosher.
Person 1 has purchased a game on disc. He gets to play it 24/7 internet or no.
Person 2 purchased the game and selected to opt out of the DRM. He gets to play the game 24/7 but can't split it with his homies or take it "on the go".
Person 3 purchased the game and decided to go in on the DRM. He has to deal with online check-ins to use this title, but he also gets to split it with 9 other people.
But that would make sense. Something the game industry hasn't exactly been doing lately.
I don't think I would have enjoyed it ever, really. I never liked comedy like that. Admittedly I like it less now, but whether or not I'm part of a suffering minority, I still find comedy that makes fun of said minority disgusting and distasteful. I don't think comedy like that will always happen. Overtly racist comedy is a lot less prominent now than it used to be, and while progress is slow, I think lots of people are rapidly realising that overtly homophobic comedy is wrong. The only reason transphobic comedy is so prominent is that transgender rights are still in the dark ages. Which is precisely why we shouldn't put up with stuff like this when it happens.
Admittedly it's not quite as bad when it happens in Japan, where violent discrimination against transgender people is pretty rare, and I can usually kind of just sigh and turn the show off when I see it in an anime, because I know that probably the worst it will lead to is the same old dumb stereotypes. In the West, though, where plenty of trans people are fired / beaten / verbally abused / killed every year just for being who they are? And where dehumanising transgender people and turning them into freak shows directly contributes to violence and hatred against them? I find very little to laugh at.
Oh, and I'm not gay myself, but I think it pretty much objectively was homophobic. :/ Actually, it was a big part of the reason that I didn't finish watching the anime. The game handled the subject pretty well. The anime not so much. ._.
Yeah, I'm just not going to comment on this. ._.
But Steins Gate isn't making fun of the character... in fact I think the protag makes it clear that gender doesn't matter. Oh well.
Oh and agreed on P4. I still had fun watching (and finishing) the show but I definitely felt the jokes were homophobic.
THE BEST METHOD to run PSX games (and everything else for that matter) is via Retroarch - http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/
If you have any questions on how to set it up on Windows please feel free to ask, its very easy.
