Haha, who knows what's going on. All I know is I looked at a list of the "Tales" games, and there are just too many for me to even care about. I'm sure like FF games, they aren't all connected except the direct sequels, but I wouldn't know where to start to be honest.![]()
Of course they aren't. And uh, start with the non-shit ones.![]()
Popular opinion or mine? I'll give you mine...keep in mind I haven't played the JP only ones.
Vesperia is the best, so it has its own tier.
Good tier: Tales of Eternia, Tales of Graces, Tales of Symphonia
Playable tier: Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Destiny
Crap tier: Tales of Symphonia 2, Tales of Legendia.
Xillia feels like it will be in the good tier from what I've heard from my friends, and Xillia 2 may have a shot at Vesperia tier.
Wouldn't mind Gare's input here, since he has played more of them than me.
I prefer your opinion, you haven't really led me astray yet so I always listen to what you have to say
I have no desire to play the JP only games, I just kind of figured since Xilia and now the Symphony games are on PS3, might be worth checking out. Vesperia is dirt as cheap these days, isn't it? I might grab that when I'm done with Lost Odyssey.
Oh, and what's so bad about Symphonia 2?
Okay Gypsy here's your input.
I don't have a PS3 so there's actually a few I haven't played like Xillia or Vesperia. And although I can emulate the likes of Symphonia I never bothered because in all honestly the game looks like shit. However, based on the ones I have played:
God tier: Tales of Destiny remake (PS2, JP-only)
Very good tier: Tales of Graces (Wii, PS3), Tales of Rebirth (PS2, JP-only)
Good tier: Tales of Destiny 2 (PS2, JP-only, *not* the same as Eternia), Tales of the Abyss (PS2)
Okay tier: Tales of Hearts (DS, JP-only)
Ehhh not too bad I guess tier: Eternia, hasn't aged well but it's still somewhat decent.
Fuck this shit tier: Phantasia (the earliest iterations on SNES and PSX), I'm sorry but it didn't age very well at all.
In short by not playing the JP ones you only miss out on the very best the series has to offer.

Yeah I've heard good things about the JP only ones on PS2. Don't have an easy way to play them without pirating though.
Symphonia is a pretty good game, maybe a bit kiddy but a pretty fun game. I'd say overall it's worth playing even if that's a turn off.
Eternia was a fine game for its time, it feels like most tales games.
I felt the GBA port of Phantasia was decent, I haven't played the really old ones.
I don't rate the series that highly for the most part. The only one I'd even rate with other JRPGs is Vesperia. I dislike a lot of the traps the games fall into. Still, they are decent enough to play and have for collection purposes.

That's what I needed to hear - they've never really sounded like something I'd be into, but I thought about maybe giving them a shot since so many people talk about them. I'll grab Vesperia, but I think I'll just hold off on anything else until they get super cheap a few years from now. And realistically by then, I'll have forgotten about them altogether![]()
THE BEST METHOD to run PSX games (and everything else for that matter) is via Retroarch - http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/
If you have any questions on how to set it up on Windows please feel free to ask, its very easy.
I was more aiming that towards the PS3 games - I doubt they'll go up anytime soon since there's a pretty good chance they'll be available on PSN. They'll be on sale at some point there for sureOf course, I could be totally wrong, but Sony does have almost everything digital these days.
I'm sure that's up to Bamco. Who knows what they will do.
Editz: Abyss would still be high if it didn't receive the reprint that it did.
