The enhanced features really aren't all that much to write home about. I suppose it's nice to play in a higher resolution and to be able to zoom in and out albeit not by much which of course are handled in the mods for the original anyways and it's nice not having the level cap and having most of the changes made in BG2 thrown in like spells and shit (I think) which you can mod once again in the original anyhow. I kept one of the new characters throughout the game (when I got him) and was really well done but overpowered (the half-orc dude, can't remember his name) The entire game takes up much less space which probably isn't much of a concern for most people but it is for me and I found that nice. And the little extra game/expansion thingy they added was absolutely horrid. Still it's Baldurs Gate which in any form simply wins

And I'm still an advocate of an EP playthrough again sometime since I missed out on the last one when I lost my net at the time not long before they started
I picked it up about a month after it's release, and didn't have any issues with it at all. Multiplayer worked, and it actually was cross-platform too (ipad/pc). Same as you, I picked up that Orc dude, can't remember his name either, and held on to him for the whole game. He was pretty good. I also picked up a girl too - a wild wizard - who wasn't bad, but she was pretty sporadic with her casting so I had to let her go eventually.
