Based on its GPU, I can't possibly see how it will rival mid range, let alone higher end gaming PCs of even 2-3 years ago. There have been lots of rumors going around how the PS4 is going to be more powerful than any gaming PC. Completely false, and I don't see why so many believe it.

Even a 2 year old mid range AMD GPU, the Radeon 6950 beats the PS4's GPU:

    http://www.amd.com/us/products/deskt...verview.aspx#2

The only thing the PS4 has going for it is the 8GB of DDR5, which I understand it will be shared between the system and with the GPU. Honestly I could build a PC for about $600-$700 right now that would be more powerful than the PS4. And as time goes on PCs will just get more powerful for cheaper.

Honestly the PS4 would be a decent price at release at around $400, much more than that would be too expensive. I'll probably wait till the price drops on it to $299 before I get one.

I think more games than ever will go multiplatform this next generation. And if the PS4's CPU is going to be x86 architecture, that means it will be easier to port games made for PS4 to PC, and they will also be better ports. And vice versa.

I'd personally like to see a much stronger lineup of RPG exclusives for PS4. If they come out swinging with some good RPG exclusives, then I'd be tempted to buy the PS4 even if its $600. But they aren't going to sell a console to me for its FPS, sports, and adventure games.

Hopefully a PS4 emulator comes out the same day the console is released Seriously, I would rather play games on the PS4 instead of a PC because of exclusives, lack of DRM and no always online crap

A bit more info for you lot

P.S. this is not a PC it's a gaming console and part of that is in the programming as well as the system specs and it is as powerfull as it needs to be, if you just want PC games then stick to a PC if you want console games then get a console or wait and see if the game you want has a PC port released as well or wait in hope as lots of console games never see a PC port the same as a lot of PC games never see a console release

If you have too much money then get both a powerfull PC and a console or two, myself I have consoles for games and a PC for anything but games.

AMD and Sony worked together to create a custom "Jaguar" APU.

AMD's Vice President of Global Communications and Industry Marketing John Taylor recently "elaborated" on the APU that is packed in Sony's semi-announced PlayStation 4 console. He said the new gaming console is the first announced design win based on a semi-custom AMD APU which was jointly developed in coordination with Sony.

"At the most basic level, an APU is a single chip that combines general-purpose x86 central processing unit (CPU) cores with a graphics processing unit (GPU) and a variety of system elements, including memory controllers, specialized video decoders, display outputs, etc.," he said. "Our semi-custom solutions take the same treasure trove of graphics; compute and multi-media IP found in our APUs, and customize them for customers who have a very specific high-volume product that could benefit from AMD’s leading-edge technologies."

But for the PlayStation 4, AMD leveraged the building blocks of its 2013 product "roadmap" for PCs and created a solution that incorporates the upcoming "Jaguar" CPU cores with next-generation Radeon graphics, thus delivering nearly 2 TFLOPS of compute performance. This will allow developers to "fundamentally" change the console gaming experience by letting them harness the power of parallel processing.

As stated on Wednesday, the APU will consist of eight x64 AMD "Jaguar" cores and a next-generation Radeon GPU comprised of 18 "compute units" capable of cranking out 1.84 teraflops. This chip will be backed by 8 GB of unified GDDR5 RAM (17 GB/sec of bandwidth), a built-in HDD, USB 3.0, a Blu-ray optical drive, Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless N and more. Note that a Radeon HD 7970 is rated at 3.5 teraflops.

AMD's "Jaguar" is the successor to "Bobcat" which powers current C- and E-Series low-power APUs. The company is expected to launch its first batch of Jaguar-based APUs during the middle of 2013, codenamed as Kabini and Temash. These 28-nm chips will have power envelopes of 15W or less, and up to four cores.

In addition to the PlayStation 4 explanation, Taylor hinted at big news on the horizon for gamers with AMD hardware. Could the company possibly be retaliating against Nvidia's Project Shield? We'll find out next month when AMD reveals its big surprise at the Game Developers Conference.

"This is going to be a very exciting year for gamers, especially for those with AMD hardware in their PCs and consoles, as we have even more game-changing (pun intended) announcements still to come," he said. "Look for some more exciting things happening at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March when we will provide even more info on how we are working with game developers to make AMD the hardware of choice for running the best games!"

Alright, you have our attention. Blow our minds next month, please. Meanwhile, we'll salivate over the new PlayStation 4 game screens… maybe.

    Jes sayin'

I'll probably pick one up at some point, a few years down the road when the price drops far enough. The specs on the thing makes my laptop look like it's from the 80's
    stole your post

    Yeah much as you say

I will myself possibly wait a while before getting one both to give the change for software developers to get used to the new system and push it a bit to give us the best of the system and for a nice price drop for us poor folk

I will try and give some examples why not to direct compare PC to Console though

The major difference between PC and Console programmers is that games on console are optimized for the system and PC developers optimize for the best available hardware (or what may be available in the future) so not all PC's will be able to handle the software but all console games for x system are handled by all the x consoles (I will not say perfectly as that is not always true though in general it is.. recently played through Silent Hill Downpour, that was way to buggy and laggy due to loading game data and saving game play)

Generally the specs needed for a PC for the same game that is on a Console is higher than the Console even if nothing is actually better done, part programming and part the varied designs of PC hardware as not all PC hardware is made to the same spec but all console hardware for x console will always be to the same spec.

Not all PC ports of Console games come out that well and often have lacked something that makes them not as good as the console original, they are getting better though

Zaladane a pocket calculator is not a laptop, even if it does has a flip screen kidding my Laptop is not a games machine I use it more for editing games (modding ) and testing, I'm sure people think I do lots of emulation on my system well they would be correct but this is not for playing the games and more for testing and again for modding using debug features and code searching (codes for a kind of soft mod and not so much for cheating)

I can honestly say as well that this system will have some nice new features though, the controller itself has some nice little features that have very little to do with the systems power as does the "eye toy" camera that will also I'm sure add to the gaming exp as for games as they are you can't only really add a few more polygon counts to them graphics otherwise are great to start with, the res is enough as going much higher you would need a silly big screen to take full advantage of it, more like home cinema sized screens, unless you sit point blank to your large TV screen so you can actually see individual pixels (silly idea unless you don't care about your sight)

    advancing on the res thing..
480 to 720 that isn't such a huge diff but there is very much an improvement on a large screen (large I'm talking about a 40 inch TV that isn't super huge or anything)
720 to 1080 that still isn't huge but there isn't any huge improvement like there is going from 480 to 720 in fact sitting a normal distance away you can hardly tell at all when going from 720 to 1080 jumping up again from this will either result in no visual difference or result in you requiring a super huge set to see it making any effect to the image.
Polygon counting is something that you will see though and can be used to great effect for 3D content and would love to see that pushed to it's limits

I'm going to get one probably the year after they come out just so they have time to fix bugs & have a cheaper price. It will add to my at the moment complete collection of PlayStations (excluding the PocketStation), but I hope it won't be region locked otherwise I might not get it, I didn't get the 3DS for that reason.
