I'm not entirely sure I follow. Generally speaking applications will recognize a file regardless of its extension, so long as that file is readable by said application; the whole point of using file extensions is as a labeling scheme for us (and recognition through an applications built-in "open" or "load" options).
It would also make the site look like it has more original stuff rather than ones that come from other sites. I know it will be a major effort on MasJ's side but it's just a suggestion.
If the "stuff" in question is, other than the labeling, identical data wise, why does it matter? Isn't a more varied selection of available content more important than who people think originally ripped it?
Also, I can imagine another reason for compressing files multiple times before hosting them would be to save bandwidth. Even negligible amounts of file size reduction (say, 10mb on a 700mb file), across multiple downloads, stand to save the administrators a substantial amount of money.

"I think that the problem with this video is it is highly derivative of many popular bands within the genre. Although when viewed on its own merits, it does have a deeper groove. However what it has in groove, it lacks in originality. One can't help but be reminded of such bands as Pearl Jam, White Zombie, Suicidal Tendencies and other bands that bear the mantle of so called "Alternative Rock". One is even reminded of Lorie Anderson when she wore curlers. Hehehmhm! This video speaks less to the heart and more to the sphincter. In closing, I think Korn would do well to learn more from -"
