Fixed it. The ribbon cable was off the blu ray drive. Updated successful and is on the main menu.

I just got damn lucky

All I need is a controller. The ps3 only came with an a/v cable, so I used a PC power cord since they're the same. I can't go any further tonight since I need a controller to do anything else.

I have a 320gb sata laptop hd on the pc in an external enclosure. I should swap it with the 80gb one in the ps3
