I think Fallout 3 can be classified as both a FPS and RPG... in my opinion

I have to agree. Not that I put much stock in labels/genres however it is easier to explain a certain game to someone who knows nothing about by genre as in "hey it's kinda like a shooter but with rpg elements" sort of deal.

I'm talking about a chat between two "gamers", usually when I describe a game to someone who isn't all hard on the lexicon, I typically start off by summarising the plot, then I explain game mechanics and the "genre". Oh and I try to compare it to games if I can.

I agree with this, I have friends that don't like RPGs but will play Skyrim, etc. It's not the fact that more genres are using first person that bothers me, it's that fact that people don't understand that (just maybe) they like rpgs or some other genre.

Then again a lot of gamers are mindless (sadly) and just want eye candy in the FPS perspective (I have one friend specifically like this.) Don't think that playing Skryim is going to = playing other RPGs any time soon. My friend openly admits that he refuses to play 2D games, RPGs, Strategy, etc. All because it has to be 3D, full of eyecandy and first person (for the most part, he does play the occasional 3rd person game like MGS4, but I bet he shoots everyone instead of sneaking...)

I play with pretty much every genre and gaming generation, but it's not really a crime for people to have casual interests. Many people only listen to one or two music genres for eg., or only watch boring movies

Your friend is just enjoying games at a level that interests him.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I actually meant to add in that I respect him for admitting that. Sounds like you got the wrong vibe from my post, I don't have anything against knowing what you like. It's those that are confused (and don't know what they like)that can be a bother to have a decent conversation with.

Nothing about other peoples gaming habits bothers me either way, just wanted to comment that a few of my friends are like this and offer up what I believe to be the explanation (being that they enjoy the eye candy.)

Yeah, if you mean people that haven't really defined in their own head what they like\don't like getting involved in gaming debates\conversations you can end up just slapping them on the mouth, they can say really silly stuff

Actually, one trend that kind of annoys me is the aggressive demand for in-depth narration or story content in games. I find there's a very outspoken group who will only play a game if they feel it is sophisticated somehow, they will rant for pages about Bioshock but attack any fps they deem simple or gameplay focused lol.

That's why I think MobyGames has better classifications. It's got Genre, Theme, and Perspective. So you can have a Sci-Fi First Person Strategy Racing game.

And some people are morons devoid of the ability to think critically

That aside though really, the whole argument is just silly. It's like people who break up music genres into their own tiny specific sub-genres (from metal to metalcore to dark doom death black metal, etc), I guess to feel like what they listen to is somehow special or more unique than what the rest of us do? The whole thing is just stupid.
"I think that the problem with this video is it is highly derivative of many popular bands within the genre. Although when viewed on its own merits, it does have a deeper groove. However what it has in groove, it lacks in originality. One can't help but be reminded of such bands as Pearl Jam, White Zombie, Suicidal Tendencies and other bands that bear the mantle of so called "Alternative Rock". One is even reminded of Lorie Anderson when she wore curlers. Hehehmhm! This video speaks less to the heart and more to the sphincter. In closing, I think Korn would do well to learn more from -"
