I'm not suggesting he get someone to wave a magic wand and fix things. I'm suggesting he contact the relevant organisations because if he is in an abusive environment (and going on what he's posted I'd say it's a pretty big if) they could conceivably help him get away from the situation. Again, I repeat, IF. Going on what he's posted here I don't feel it's applicable but I'm throwing it out there. I don't know Shane or his life so I'm giving him the information on the off-chance there are things going on he doesn't want to discuss online.
Any medication - mood altering or otherwise - can have side effects. With antidepressants and mood stabilisers it's a bit more common but the effects are usually pretty mild. If you feel you're having trouble with them you tell your doctor about it and try something else. As long as you're in good physical health medication isn't going to cause you any harm, especially not at the doses they start you on.
Why would leaving get him arrested? Isn't he allowed to move out at 16 in South Africa? Because unless his parents are doing something ridiculous like chaining him up in the basement or putting out cigarettes on his arms (in which case we're back at paragraph 1), learning to deal with his parents or leaving are his only two options.
