Are there any games that are hardcoded to a certain region like a couple of later Mega Drive titles? I never really researched it.

There are, but it only applies if you're playing PAL games on an NTSC console or vice versa. American and Japanese games are 100% interchangeable as far as I'm aware. The only difference is the cartridge shape.
