I have a couple of both but I find that my 200GB HDD keeps me using my FAT model.
    Glad you got this solved.

    Only the Fat models, yes:

Any IDE HDD can be formatted and used with FreeMcBoot to store games and play them much faster than the USB 1.1 slots and faster than DVD too!

Why Sony wouldn't have carried that feature over to the PS2 slim is beyond me! Makes me want to buy a fat just for the hard drive lol That's so freaking cool though!

I figured an external hdd could be used since USB's work. I have a pata to USB converter for laptop hard drives that just crapped out on me. It was only 40 bills. I'd rather have the internal HDD though!

You can have the USB drive formatted properly, but I did mention that the USB slots are v1.1
v1.1 is VERY slow. You will have lagging and you will not be happy. PS1 might work alright through it, but I haven't tried that yet.
The funny thing is that Fat PS2's are cheaper, but better in many cases. Trick one of your friends into trading your slim for their fatty.

I have not experienced the lagging you are talking about. I have however, experienced the opposite. The game will speed up and kind of skip a little. I noticed when I went to save and the music speed up almost double. Weird huh?!

Cheaper only by $10 lol You are evil though. I don't really think it would be considered tricking since its an upgrade on his part.

    An upgrade, huh?
You really think slimline drives last as long full size drives?
Or zero network connectivity is a plus?
    Or no HDD connection?
    Or no internal fan?
And what about the power switch on back? in standby, the PS2 uses as much electricity as a fridge.

    FAT FTW.

I didn't think about it like that. The flop top is such a convenience though! What happens when the motor or something relevant, craps out on the fat? Then what? At least the flip top is so much more reliable and will be less likely to break. Even if it does, it would be so much more easier to fix! I like the way you can just pop in a game with the slim too!

The flip top is the only reason I don't trade a friend for the fat! The switch, the fan, the hard drive are all percs almost worthy enough to forget about the flip top.... almost!

I wish PS3 didn't use blueray discs. Burning game would get expensive lol

How is the scene for the PS3 anyway? Anywhere near as awesome as ours?

The flip top does not nearly out weigh the other factors. The slims do not last and are not made to last. They are flimsy and use weak technology; i.e. the slimline drive. DC motors don't just crap out under ordinary circumstances and even if they were to do so, the slims have motors too.
I have several of each version PS2, and I know which ones go first.
