Best bet is download a dos emulator like dosbox, if you've never used one before grab yourself one with a frontend for it for making setup much easier for you.

    dosbox downloads

I checked the compat list and looks like it's fully supported

I downloaded dosbox. And followed the instruction. But when i type
    mount c d:\doofus
    it appears
    mount c d: ]doofus

I don't know why it does this.

    The game is DOOFUS

I have download one but I don't know how to use it.
I suppose it may be due to the fact that my system is win7 64

I really want to play this game. It has been almost 20 years since the last time I played it.

Front ends work in windows 7 64bit I know because I have used dos box and a front end on my laptop, though I admit I can't remember what one that was

The only reason I can think that / would be replaced with ] would be that the keyboard is incorrectly setup with dosbox us mixed with uk.. I dunno (you could try different symbols until the correct one shows though)

Anyway another way is to use a popper system emulator that will emulate the system hardware and you install/run real dos in that, if you have the Enterprise and Ultimate version of win7 64bit you can get virtual PC from Microsoft for free http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc as a nice extra you can get windows XP with it for free

If not there is something called Virtual box found at https://www.virtualbox.org/ that is also a machine emulator that lets you chose what OS it uses

Dos and or up to Windows 2K should do the trick but best to stick to dos to be honest, do not forget to load sound and mouse drivers for dos though

It's not because you are using a laptop at all

if / = [ then it is reasonable to think that / is located elseware maybe even on the [ key

P.S. does this do the same in notepad??? if so I am reasonably sure I know the fix

Dos have the "keyb" command; if you need to know your keyboard code/type or the dosbox sintax go here: http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/KEYB

Also you can use a Dosbox frontend like DOG: http://www.freewebs.com/erikgg/ (you can setup keyboards, cpu, ram, devices, etc. and save the configuration files).

I tried the [ key and other key. But still can't find the \.
My laptop is without a CD-ROM so you can call it a notepad.
What is your solution for a notepad?

Nothing that I know of, but it's been a while since I used dosbox

most frontends will let you do all the mounting in the frontend anyway so you should be able to avoid that issue that way, just find one that works for you

    On Dosbox window type
    KEYB <country code>

    For example:
    Keyb gr (load german keyboard)
Keyb uk (load english uk keyboard)
    Keyb it (load italian keyboard)

    A boring Lesson:

There was only few kb of ram, and tapes as storage media; so they choose to convert: 1 character = 1 byte, but a byte contain a value from 0 to 255 and we've all this funny letters like: "Äöüèòà£$€ÆÅĈĎÿĜ".

So the Ascii tables was made (256 characters each), for 0-128 common letters (numbers, A to Z, a to z), from 129 to 255 custom language characters and special symbols.

    For example you've:

On UK keyboard: "left shift", "| \", "Z"
On Netherlands keyboard: "left shift", "[]:", "Z"
On German keyboard: "left shift", "><", "Z"

I tried to type Keyb uk as you said. But it didn't work. It said Keyboard layout uk loaded for codepage 858. And I tried to type \ it still appeared ]

Windows Menu > Control Panel > Region & Language > Keyboard and Languages > Change Keyboard = will tell you what region your keyboard is setup for.

From there you can add or remove Keyboard Languages (you can't remove a default language) [P.S. this is not changing the language of your computer it is only changing the layout of your keyboard].

The above will atleast tell you what layout your keyboard is currently using, make sure dosbox is looking for the same keyboard layout, it's no good setting it to read the En UK layout when the keyboard is setup to be that of a Netherlands layout or something.
