Does anyone else feel that old Resident Evil is MUCH better in the horror section than the newer games? I most certainly do!
It's got some hokey dialogue, but definitely still a great game. I remember being shocked... I don't know, dozens of times that this was made in the same era as Super Mario and Duck Tales. And trust me, the story get's pretty insane.
I knew about The 7th Guest and Dark Fall, and I actually own Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (never got around to playing Bloodlines though, I wasn't aware of the ludicrous compatibility issues ), but I had no idea about the others. Also, when I did a search, I learned that Personal Nightmare and Waxworks are both part of the Elvira series. The more you know.
Damn, now that you mention old DOS games it reminds me of I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, the bleakest fucking video game in existence, other than maybe Drakengard.
Also, they aren't DOS games, and I haven't played them myself, but here are some other oldish computer games I've heard about: Bad Mojo, Sanitarium, Post Mortem, (which I saw on Steam years ago and forgot about, then did a search just now and it turns out it is part of a series)... And this one other game I can't remember, except I think the basic premise was that you were investigating a murder or something (go figure ), but the game would email you things in real life like you were actually part of an investigation.
ALSO: I tracked down the old article where I first learned about Sweet Home and, I have No Mouth and I Must Scream years ago: "The Top 7... Scariest games you've never played"
And to avoid spoilers, (of which there are many for those two games specifically), here is the list:
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (1995, PC)
Sweet Home (1989, NES)
The Lurking Horror (1987, DOS, Apple II, Commodore 64, Amiga) [It's a text adventure]
Illbleed (2001, Dreamcast)
The Path (2009, PC, Mac)
Haunted House (1981, Atari 2600)
The Dark Eye (1995, PC) [Always wanted to play this one, but never found it]
Lastly, on the more modern side of things, Corpse Party (there are two PSP games if you want more portable), and Dark Fall: Lost Souls... Yeah, I think that is finally about it, assuming you've played the basics, like the rest of the Penumbra games and the Alone in the Dark series, F.E.A.R, Limbo, etc.

Lots of obscure games listed on Chris' Survival Horror Quest blog.
Zork.
no, Slender is dumb, not scary.
Now see that? What a guy......he 'works' as one of my personal tech-guys, and if I had to recommend him in an employment situation, I'd give him a solid 96%...no joke.
Oh....scariest game? Well, I tried a 'Little Pony' game for Sega Genny a few years back, THAT was pretty friggin horrific.
that would have to be Silent Hill
I was recently looking through a list of translation patches and found one for a Square game on the DS titled "The Nameless Game". I thought, since it was Square, it would probably be an RPG, right? Haha, yeah NO. It's a horror game, straight up. The worst part isn't scary monsters or anything, so far it's just zombies. It's all in the movement system. It's tough to control, and your character moves slowly. No strafing, either. You gotta move forward, turn right for a bit, then keep running forward. Not THAT big of a problem since the zombies are slow as hell, but it just makes things that much more scary. In games like Left 4 Dead, I like strafing around corners just to get a bit of a peek to make sure nothing's there first. In games like this, I have to expose myself first, THEN turn around to see if there's an enemy.
Another thing about it is that it's way too easy to die. If the zombies even get too CLOSE to you, they catch you and it's over. You don't have HP or anything like that. It wouldn't be so bad if you could, like, try to run past and still be okay, but the one-touch kills plus the slow movement... Too scary. I like horror games in a sense, in that I like it if I at LEAST get a chance to fight back, almost like Demtium(spelled right?): The Ward on the DS. Although the amount of vision fog on that one makes it so that I still get little warning when things are gonna pop out at me.
Oh, and also the disturbing little shit they throw in there in The Nameless Game. At one point, they throw surprise after surprise at you. First, a random hospital bed rolls towards you out of nowhere. Then a zombie falls on grating above you really loudly. And then another one appears and starts bashing on metal bars, but it slowly disappears. None of this stuff can even hurt you, but... I dunno, fear is a negative feeling in my opinion. XD Unless I at least get to chance to feel some adrenaline pumping as I run away, it's no fun for me. And since I can't even fight back and I run so slowly, I just can't play this one anymore. But hey, if you like having the shit scared out of you, dying multiple times as you figure out where you're supposed to go and then having there be NOTHING you can do about it, this one's for you. But seriously. Aren't horror games just for showing off to your friends how brave you are?? XD
Horror games. Brrrr.

u can also play it there directly
Some people are missing the point of the thread.
Its to do with more obscure survival horror games, Silent Hill is far from that given its one of the top 3 survival horror game franchises.

Rofls aye.
I'm shocked no one mentioned "Obscure" and "Obscure: The Aftermath" they wasnt AAA stuff but very decent, just often forgotten the first ones opening part really set the pace for the game and in the second one...
Spoiler warning:
was really well done, it was like bringing a typical teen horror to the consoles / pc and in the case of the 2nd one even PSP and did it well with each having there own special traits and drop in / out co-op
