Backstory? I played GW1 and I don't even know what it was all about. Actually, I don't know what any MMO is about, I'm just there to party up with dudes, kill chickens and boars and dance naked in the middle of the street!

(I know that sounds terrible but that's 99% of MMO players )
From the synopsis my friends gave last time: GW1 = CHAR WAN 2 KILL DE HUMANZ. GW2 = CHAR FRENZ WIT HUMANZ, BUT SUM HUMANZ WAN 2 KILL DE CHARZZARD.

Obviously, a gigantic generalization. But yeah. Definitely right that knowing the backstory isn't really necessary for MMOs. You watch the cinematics, read the quests, and you'll pick up the story as you go. A lot of things from previous games will be hinted at, but it won't hurt your gameplay experience at all if you don't read the wiki first. You may just miss things like "AH HOLY SHIT IT'S THAT ONE GUY WHO LOST HIS EYE IN THAT ONE QUEST IN GW1." And he now has an eyepatch.

I hope there is a free weekend because I don't want to pay the full amount for the game just yet until I know it's worth it, a few of my friends are getting it and I've had great fun in skype calls playing starcraft & terraria.

I can't see myself getting GW 1 at this point now anyway.
I think the last beta weekend before release has already passed. But I wouldn't be surprised if there's some 1 week trial or something.

I probably wasn't really clear there. By "pick it up now" I meant get GW2 when it drops. You'd be a bit behind from not playing GW1 or any of the betas to learn the UI and combat system and such, but not so much that you feel like everything is old content by the time you get your first taste of it. That's what happened to me with a lot of the TBC and WotLK raids, since I played about the first year of each, then quit for a few months and missed two tiers of progression.

EDIT: Guild Wars 2 Stress Test is today (Aug. 9th) from noon to 4 PM PST, but it's only open to people who have pre-purchased. So that's in 8 hours. Other than that, there's the head start on August 25th. Play for 3 days before release if you've pre-purchased, carry your character over.

It doesn't bother me if I'm not completely on top of things/up to date when I start playing GW2.

    So much win.

I'll be away for a few days, probably appearing now and then.

Honestly, the closest to RPing that I ever got was making a macro to yell "DINOS, BUFF UP!" followed by "DINO SHOUT RAAAA!" prior to casting Battle Shout.

    And since I wasn't a dinosaur, I don't think that really counts.

Can't believe there would come an opportunity for me to dig that YT video up again after all those years, but there you have it. THANK YOU GYPSY.
