Can you play Gamecube games from the HDD? If so, I would consider getting one, but I'm not sure if they're still available.

Sure can....it emulates the optical drive.
Note: streaming audio doesn't work...but this only usually means some in-game music won't play.
The games themselves run with no lag or anything.
There's only one NGC game I haven't been able to run on it: Ikaruga.
And you can still use WODE with a softmod Wii if you want to
