Hard in some aspects, not too hard in others. In terms of the actual written system itself, it's one of the harder languages out there (some would say the hardest). But it's not particularly complex in other aspects. It has something of a steep learning curve because the grammar's so different to English, but in many respects it's far simpler than something like Russian or even French.

Re: materials, I didn't learn much from textbooks, so I couldn't really say. :'D There are a wealth of good free dictionaries and grammar resources out there, though, as it's one of the most popular languages to self-study these days. Google is your friend.

Hiragana / katakana can be learned in far less than a month. They're really no more tricky than Russian Cyrillic or Korean Hangeul, both of which I learned in an afternoon. They might take a little longer because there are two of them and because the first foreign alphabet you learn tends to be the hardest (I learned Hangeul and Cyrillic after learning Japanese), but with a little application they're not difficult, and most university courses in Japanese will expect students to know both scripts within the first week or two.

The trouble is that almost anything short of children's books and very early videogames will use kanji as well. And while kanji aren't as scary or impossible as some people would have you believe, learning kanji compounds, readings and characters will be something that continues in varying degrees for as long as you learn Japanese. If you're really good, you can probably learn most of the kanji (though not necessarily the readings / vocabulary / grammar) in a Japanese novel in six months to a year. For most people, though, you're looking at multiple years. It's not as bad as it sounds, though, as there's a lot of crossover between learning kanji and learning vocabulary, which you kind of have to do with any foreign language anyway.

I just had a think about this again (it's getting late here, and I'm a bit tired)
Postage for that would be ridiculous (probably $50, maybe more, I dunno).
And would it even play selfboots?

We should have two that will and one that won't.

I could check for you it would be no trouble.

Online site is being shitty. There has to be some non-priority option.

I'll check next time I'm at the P.O.

    Like I said: no rush

I've done some checking on the cheap JPN bare unit I spotted.
Going by the model number and serial, I'm pretty sure it'd be fine with selfboots (but I guess I could be wrong).
Do you know if any controllers/vmu's would work fine with a Japanese unit? I would've thought it wouldn't matter (like psx)
Getting an a/v lead isn't a prob, and the power converter I've already got should be fine.

Yeah mate controllers, VMUs, Rumble packs etc all work on any console. You'll need some kind of boot swap to play real copies of non-JP games of course. I assume you'll just be burning everything anyway tho.
