Can anyone recommend a Pokemon game for someone who's never played anything from the series and knows nothing about the game? What would say is the best start for someone wanting to get into the game, or which instalment will make the best impression on a newcomer?

I would recommend the original three(or two if you know your stuff) on Game Boy Color-Pokemon Yellow, Red, and Blue.
Don't worry, the three versions are not a series, so you don't have to beat Blue if you played Red or yellow.
