This is where providing information about your computer really helps, as directed in the stickied thread. As Del_Boy stated, updated your video drivers. If you're using a nVidia card, get the new detonator drivers.

AS said before update or even just install your video card/chip drivers you can do this either online or from the provided CD you should have

Default Monitor has nothin to do with it but I do suspect you have XP's default drivers for your video card/chip but that is not for your card but only basic VGA drivers

I only mentioned this so you don't have the same prob again personly I always look for updates on reinstall and on getting new hardware.

Just search and check out the official sites for your hardware 9 out of 10 times you will find an updated driver even on the latest hardware

Sounds like your moniter is dead if it won't detect it as a plug N play moniter (Thats what was stopping you change your res) see if the moniter will work on anyone elses pc.

Never depend on xp to do your driver installations. Always know what hardware your running in your computer before your format it, and then go on the net and download the drivers and burn it on a disk.

As stated before by other people you need to go directly to the manufactures website and download their drivers.

Here are some updates that are a must for a clean format.

    1. motherboard drivers
    2. video card drivers
    3. xp sp1 and any other update
    4. sound card drivers
    5. modem drivers

These are usually the basic drivers that should be saved on a disk. You'll have to find each one by manufacture.

Graphics, and 3D polygons don't make great games, story-lines do!!

Dont need to install mointer, its the graphics card drivers he needs.

Edit: also if you dont know what graphics card you have, could always open the comp and if it should be right on the back somewhere
