The difficult part is really those expressions native speakers use.
For example if I translated directly some sentences from portuguese
word by word they would make no sense in english.
But, aww, thanks.

(although the major problem might be, not really being left out, but more "easily deceived"... )

Nothing wrong with that. My brother in law has become decently fluent in Japanese specifically because he enjoys anime, video games, and manga. A reason to learn makes the learning better and more effective and more likely to stick around.

Yes, I think that learning becomes a lot more productive when there is a reason, but also when it is enjoyable.
