Driving his way is boring. My grandad goes from 1>2>3>5 on every road.
If I'm doing 20, he says just use 2nd.
If I'm doing 30, he says just use 3rd. And so on.
It's correct to get it into 5th as soon as you can, right?
My Grandad also ALWAYS puts the handbrake on when he stops. Even if it's just for a few seconds. Not sure if it's because of his knees (they're fucked basically) or whether it's better to do that? I find holding the clutch and brake down so tedious. I'd rather just put the handbrake on.![]()

First thing I'm doing when I pass my test is crossing my hands when I turn the God damn steering wheel. That's the most pathetic thing I've ever heard, that you're not allowed to do.![]()

Hello avariwan.
Not necessarily.
With most cars it's an overdrive gear, so to select it in all situations at low revs isn't as economical as you'd think......plus it isn't good for acceleration.
Yeah, using the handbrake is good for hill starts........you use neutral and the main brakes while waiting for lights (this is in case somebody hits you.....the car won't move as far using the main brakes, plus: brake lights).
You shouldn't always use the handbrake though......it's generally not as strong as the main brakes.
Whatever you do don't ride the clutch, women do that all the time and it wears it out more quickly
The only bad points I got when getting my licence was for over-use of gears.......changing down through all of them (using the engine as a brake as well as the actual brakes)![]()

I don't ride the clutch, I used to when I was first driving, but I just put my foot back to the deadpanel or whatever it's called automatically now. It's cool.
