Christmas Island detention centre is more than 200 over capacity after more than 1000 asylum seekers arrived in the past two months.
As the Immigration Department activated its contingency plans to deal with the overcrowding, two detainees were being treated for potentially deadly typhoid fever.
One of the asylum seekers has been flown to mainland Australia while a second is in isolation on the island.
