Remember you can sell the faulty PS3 on eBay for a substantial amount, people will be interested in case they can fix it, plus having a new laser is another good selling point.

As far as reballing goes, it's definitely not something you can do.
Reflowing yes, with a hot air gun. Incredibly temporary though, it may last a few hours or it may last a few years, who knows.

You will have to just format it in a PC, then put it back into the PS3. If they get it working again it'll just say the drive needs to be formatted and setup to work on a PS3.
