    Default vba link troubles

Well i'm trying to get pokemon firered and pokemon leafgreen to link up with each other so i can evolve pokemon like graveler and haunter etc etc. For leafgreen i'm using my own save file, and for firered one that i downloaded from gamefaqs. According to just about everywhere i look the 2 games can trade with each other(trading with ones like ruby or sapphire is another story) as soon as you get a pokedex, so that isn't the issue.

Anyway having both games at the same pokemon center with the link timeout set to 10000 i just get the message "communciations error, please check all connections and turn the power off and on again." I've also tried reducing mentioned timeout amount to about 2000, same result. Thoughts?

yes, both copies of vba link running were configured to "single computer" I wonder if its the port number thats the issue, both copies are using 5738 by default

okay redownloaded from there, file still does not contain vbaserver.exe. Also upon reading through the instructions for linking on a single computer and LAN, it looks like the mentioned .exe is only needed if i'm doing LAN.

I only used the LAN version.
Also, make sure pause when inactive is off.

yep already unchecked the pause when inactive.

    EDIT
AHH! vbaserver.exe is only contained in the 1.7.2 version!

    EDIT AGAIN
okay after fiddling around with things for about a half hour i can now successfully link and trade on my own computer Thank you very much for the help, i've been fighting with this(other games, but linking in general) for about a year now on and off trying to get somewher, including trying several different emulators and until now no success. Finally the nightmare of wondering why this won't work is over!

okay hmmn after successful trading, i exported the save from vba link as a gameshark snapshot file then imported it back to vba. Upon loading the game up i get a corrupted text box however. If i press A a couple of times i can still load up the save and everything seems normal. Then if i overwrite the old save file, everything looks normal on the next boot up. Sound like anything to worry about?

Wierd but why not just use VBA-M that is VBA including all the hack versions including VBA-Link

    Or just use VBA link

unless you ment to say back to the GBA via a GameShark USB link, that might just be the RTC (Real Time Clock) part giving the error, that is nothing to worry about as that gets fixed anyway

I dont really want to import the save file to VBA-M, the sound mixing on there(even with identical options selected as i have set in VBA) ends up sounding horrible for about 90% of my roms. I avoid using it as much as i possibly can quite honestly. And no i wasn't trying to move the save to a real GBA, dont even own one.

    EDIT
on a side note, i have tried (including the latest version i can find, 1030) using VBA-M on several occasions to establish a link without success. VBA link 1.8 produces no results as well. It wasn't until starting up this topic and fiddling with VBA link 1.7.2 that i ever actually got somewhere. Feels quite good really after fighting with it on and off for about a year.(maybe more.....) In fact i think i made a topic on here once before, some time back, about such issues and never got them solved till just a couple of days ago with this topic haha.

    I can't link at all with VBA-M.
