I couldn't solder too well before I JTAG'd my first 360. Practice makes perfect, start on some broken electronics just so you can learn the technique. It's really not too hard.

It's not like you have to hand-solder surface mount parts or something.

The solder points are actually rather "large" and where they're positioned it's pretty hard to accidentally bridge points. Oh well, each to their own. I started by soldering on some original XBOXes. Adding USB ports and such, until I thought I was ready for more risky stuff.
