    They have been for years.

And they work. Problem is, the guns tend to wear out absurdly quickly or occasionally explode.

The more durable models aren't really as portable as traditional firearms. And considering you can build a traditional missile launcher or high caliber gun for a small fraction of what it costs, it hasn't been readily adopted.

Smaller scale coilguns are being seen as somewhat more feasible. But I doubt we'll be seeing standard military application of it anytime soon.

But... But... Movies told me we would be in space, with killer computers, a decade ago!

according to movies, we would all have flying cars in 3 years. We have the technology, it's just not feasible.

We are in space with killer computers.

It's just that there's no money to be had in putting that to use.

Plus AI controlled systems are considered a thoroughly bad idea for pretty obvious reasons.

    Not really.

Some dipshit that didn't know how to code properly fucked HAL up.

    Normally, it should go

    Don't harm crew
    Accomplish mission

But some idiot suit made it

    Accomplish mission
    Don't harm crew

As such, accomplishing the mission took priority over keeping the crew alive. Hilarity ensues.

Sorry guys, the mission was absolute, keeping you alive was an if.

Also, it's the fucking future, do they not have orbital laser canons and bombs?

    I mean, really now.
Well, to be fair, it was just basically a PMC with improvised weapons hired by the company on the planet. I don't know how many PMCs in the real world have state-of-the-art MBTs, cruise missiles, or aircraft carriers.
Or, of course, after the eviction of the humans and the end of the movie, the military came in and wiped everything out with relativistic weapons. It's one of those inferred happily-ever-afters.
