Default PS3 or Xbox 360? (Which one should I get?)

I currently have a Wii. Since the Wii U is coming out soon, I decided I was going to sell my old Wii and get another console that I haven't had much of a chance to play yet.

My Wii is softmodded, and I need some help getting it UN-modded. If you can help me out, check out this thread: http://www.epforums.org/showthread.p...82#post1350382

Here's what I'm looking at right now:

    PS3:
Pro: Free online play (I know, they've been hacked. I don't really care, no problem for me)
Con: Not a lot of games I would personally want to play. I don't like shooters very much, and honestly, most of the popular games on the PS3 these days are shooters.

    360:
Pro: There are a lot of games for it that I would play, like Left 4 Dead, Banjo-Kazooie Nuts N' Bolts, DDr Ultramix (I'm probably the last person in the world who actually plays DDR a lot, lol). Plus, generally less expensive than PS3.
Con: I hear 360 stuff breaks easily. I've heard story's about constantly broken controllers, people getting a brand new console repaired four times and such. I'm usually pretty careful with my stuff, but hearsay is that 360 stuff is made NOT to last. Oh yeah, and you gotta pay for online.

So, please give me your opinions on which one. :3 Please, no fanboy-ism... Don't say that one is better than the other just because you like it better or because of a single game. As a console in general, games non-excluded, which one do you think is better and why?

One last thought, if all else fails, I might also get a PSP. I enjoy portable gaming, and there are a few games for it I want to try (Sonic Rivals, FFTactics Lion Wars, 13th Birthday, KH Birth By Sleep... Hmm, mostly Square Enix games, huh? Word.)

I personally vouch for PS3, mainly because there are a lot of games on it that I personally enjoy. It also couples as a Blu-Ray player (albeit not a great one), which the 360 does not. As for games themselves... I find they are both fairly equal, to be honest. I personally find that 360s have more shooters (especially when you look at the fact that their two most popular exclusive titles are Halo and Gears of War), where as most of the other shooters are multi-platform (Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc).

Again, it really boils down to what kind of games you like to play, what you're willing to spend (PS3s are a bit more expensive, true), and also (if you're interested in online play) what your friends have as well. If you don't really care about any of the exclusive titles, and all of your friends have a PS3, then get a PS3. If your friends all have 360s and you don't care about PS3s exclusives, then get a 360. I can't personally say anything about the PSP, since I've never owned one and have no intention of every owning one.

Also, if you want a comprehensive list of what exclusive titles there are for each system, check out this Wiki page. I used it when I was trying to decide between the two systems, and it helped make my decision a little bit easier.

ps3- less fps games, getting a ffx remake if your into that sometime in 2013, psn has anime and tv shows you can download to your console, controllers are better built and less parts so not easy to break, six axis if you like more control (example reloading in gta4). also i heard it has better graphics but they all look the same to me. also if you get a psp, you can hack it and play your games through the ps3 (or get something where you can plug your psp into the tv directly). also it has a built in web browser and, unlike microsoft, supports multi gaming (download it on one console you can play on another). bluetooth, psmove. just insert the cd no drive opens, blue ray, doesnt support game chat over other games

xbox360- netflix only for tv shows, have to have gold to view it though. you get all the sports updates, more complex interface, smaller version is alittle more reliable and unhackable (as far as i know). oh and xbox360 games some have updates for them almost every day. good for fps games, has more exclusives but mostly fps. slim comes in only black and its shiny and has fans all over the place. controllers arnt ment to last (average 3 every year before the rubber wears off or the joystick breaks) if you download a game you can only play it on that console unless your the one who downloaded it. kinnect. xbox 360 slide sometimes jams (they should have went with sony on this one), hd, supports chat over multiple games (i find this a usless feacher as i like playing games not listening to people talk smack)

both- hdmi, look terrible on sd tv's, come in two types (fat and slim), both can be tracked, both have motion gaming, one is quieter than the other (i heard complaints about the ps3 being loud but i never heard it and the 360 is quiet if you have a game installed) both can install games to hard drive, both play movies ect.

so really its what you like. both consols also have a failing rate of the same as of late so it doesnt matter which you get (as of late meas after the slim was released). this is my honest oppinion, oh yeah one more thing, the ps3 is more on software than people relize, you have to own one to see. xbox is about hardware. ok the reason i say that: move is compatible with all the ps3. kinnect is only compatable with the fats using a phone cord, figure that one out. but i wont go into motion gaming. i own a 360 but i wish i had a ps3.

Thanks for the replies so far. I have a few more concerns.
    1. I don't own an HD TV. They can still do standard, right? I've played L4D2 plenty of times on my TV using my buddy's 360.
    2. So far, it seems I was wrong about the shooters! XD But yeah, aside from Left 4 Dead, I'm not so into those kinds of games. Dude... FFX is being re-made already? Hey, I did like that game, if only for the visuals and pretty decent voice acting. I've actually been playing through FFXII, which I find VERY good, despite what people say about it. So yeah, that would be cool...

Also, I'm reminded by garrens sig: I actually own a 3DS, which I would be getting no questions asked if I didn't already have one. XD I'm honestly much more of a portable gamer, but I feel bad for my TV since it doesn't get a lot of attention.

Right now it's looking like I'll have to look through some PS3 games at Game Stop tomorrow to see what's out there. Any other opinions? what are some good PS3 games? I'll play a good shooter game, but things like Black Ops aren't my kind of thing. I got bored with Halo pretty quickly, too.

EDIT: @ Kouen: Weeeell, L4D is only multi-platform by way of 360 and PC, and my PC is crap. It can't even run OnLive. I'm missing Pixel Shader 2.0, apparently. BUT, I love my junker. XP Kind of...

I pretty much agree with Drag. Personally I prefer the PS3 since I haven't had it break (unlike my 360), and I also tend to enjoy being able to play with pals online for free (most of said pals are actually EPers ). That said, if you prefer the 360 exclusives, don't care about paying for online, and/or just want to spend less on the console itself, go with it. The list Drag provided should be helpful in deciding

As for PSP, I rather enjoy it. It sounds like there are several games you're interested in already, and if you have a pal that can let you borrow or use his/her PSP for a bit, you can determine from that if it's something you'd want to buy.

Where do you get the info that the failure rate is the same? I ask because according to this survey I found, 360s still fail more than twice as often as PS3s do. (Fifth chart. Says "2011 Console Failure Rate".) Perhaps that info is a bit dated/more has come out since, but then, that's why I'm asking where you got said info

edit: Yeah, they can be displayed on SD, but some games (Dead Space comes to mind) use HD fonts, which is hard to read. At least if you're used to seeing them in HD (I personally had no problems reading the font on SD, until I started hooking the console up to my computer monitor, then when I went back to SD, I could barely read some things.)

well star ocean international is on the ps3. if you dont like the english setting you can set everything to japanese (i did that when we had someone live here with a ps3). if you like sandbox games then gtaIV is good as well as saints row 2. also yes you can play on sd tv though depending on how old it is, you might lose some of the picture. and yeah ffx was annouced at the japan e3 (i forget what site but i found it on a few). infamous is fun and a few others i forget the name of.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...tation_3_games

there is a list of all the ps3 games. i would recomend the slim if you can get it, oh one more thing if there is a game in that is exclusive in japan you can play it on a ntscu console

Gah, missed part of your post

What genres do you prefer? Demon's Souls, Nier, FFXIII (yes, I rather enjoyed the game. Don't really get all the hate about/for it....), Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted 1 and 2 (though I agree that 2 was more fun than 1), the BB games, and others come to mind (I'm still waiting on Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection. Never got a chance to play the PS2 versions.), but it'd be easier to suggest if we knew your favourite genres (you'll notice most of my off-hand suggestions are types of RPG games, since I tend to like those above the other genres)

just look on the shelf's of both machines see what exclusives tickle your fancy the most then go to the Wii section, point and laugh and then go back to the 360 / ps3 section again
That I will. Then I will bow before SSBB. That's one of two games for the Wii I'll be keeping for when I get my Wii U.
The other one is Pokemon Battle Revolution. Pokemon is my favorite game of all time at the moment... I collect everything Pokemon, my room is full of Poke stuff. XP I'm not a little kid, okay!? Lol.

But yeah, that starts my list of favorite games. I've mentioned it above, but I also find some decent entertainment in Final Fantasy. I also really like Puzzle games and music games. My friend has Guitar Hero 5 with a lot of the intsruments though, so Guitar Hero and Rock Band are kind of out of the question. Especially since it's so hard to track down the controllers for them these days!
I like strategy games, too. Advance Wars: Days of Ruin and Paper Mario 2 come to mind as two of the few games I've actually beaten to date.
Let's see... The only RTS games I've ever liked were the 2 Pikmin games, which are both two more of the few games I've cared to beat to date. I doubt there are any Pikmin-like games on 360 OR PS3. XD Man, they don't do it often, but when Nintendo makes a classic... X3

So far, the 360 exclusives seem the best to me, and money is a bit of an object for me, even though I'm trading in most of my games and accessories as well. I think I have a good idea of what I want. I'll just bring my trades, look at the PS3 shelf, the 360 shelf. See what I like, get what I want.

I heard the 360 is soft-moddable. If I get it, I in no way plan to pay for online, which I heard is the only thing you can lose if you're caught being modded. But that's just another thing for me to consider, I guess.

Man, I wish there was a third choice besides the Wii, of course. I don't want my 360 stuff to break, but I seem to like the games better. I like the PS3 controller and everything better, but I'm not sure what games that interest me are on it.

Well, keep giving opinions! Thanks for all the input! Meanwhile, I haven't gotten any replies on the other thread I mentioned in the first post yet. I can't really trade in a modded Wii... At least, I don't want to, lol. If anyone knows how to uninstall some stuff from a Wii, it would be nice.

the new slim 360 cannot be hard modded or soft modded in any way shape or form. i highly doubt they still have any of the original 360's in the stores. the ps3 shelf is always full of games. oh and dont forget devil may cr 4! disgaea and i think there is a tales of game. oh and you said stratagy? check out catherine (ps3 has the sexier game case). not to mention persona 5 has been unoficially announced as a ps3 exclusive

    http://www.ology.com/technology/fina...unced-ps3-vita

here is the announcment for ffx (its someone who typed it not the actual announcment)

If you plan to spend anything on the online stores (PSS/XBL), you may want to check what kind of exclusives those have as well. For example (though maybe I just overlooked it), I didn't see Dead Nation in the list Drag gave, so it may not actually list the online store games (or maybe it wasn't listed while others were...)

xbox live doesnt have cheap games though. most of the good ones are expensive still. plus one you may be looking for might not be on there as an actual download (same with sony but at least sony wont trick you buy having the game on there in the first place)

Xbox 360 in my honest opinion. From my personal experience people are less likely to be a dick on live than they are on PSN.
However, playing the PS3 is the same as fucking a really pretty girl, it gets boring and loses its charm after about 5 minutes and when its done you feel deep shame.
