They have been doing that somewhat with a lot of those VideoOnDemand services -- which I did use a fair bit with my cable -- where you can watch certain shows at any time free of charge, similar to Netflix. That's how I watched the entirety of the first season of The Walking Dead, and Season 3 of Breaking Bad. Much easier than downloading, and Netflix didn't (and still doesn't, as far as I'm aware) offer them.
However, for movies and whatnot, Netflix is by far the way to go. I don't see cable disappearing entirely, at least not until the baby boomer generation completely dies off (and that includes baby boomer's kids, like my parents), but people tend to stick to what they know and trust. I don't see my parents ever getting rid of their cable, and probably about 80% of the people in that age range (my parents are just shy of 50) will continue to have cable, likely until the day that they die. And even then, a lot of people are still going to have cable just for the new shows that come out -- how many people are hooked on all of those reality shows and whatnot, or the new season of How I Met Your Mother/Big Bang Theory/<insert-generic-show-here> and absolutely must see it when it airs, screw downloading/streaming it?
The answer? A lot. Maybe not so much on this board, but the people on this site aren't representative of the norm of society. Suffice to say, I don't see Netflix or similar services making a complete takeover for a long, long time.
