Unfortunately it's complete garbage. It took nothing good from the olden days, and added a bunch of terrible aspects of modern FPS's. There's just too much wrong with it to make the few neat things in it worth the purchase. It's nice that this series can be buried forever.

Legends don't go out on a bang, but a whimper...

Have to agree unfortunately... What bothered me the most was the lousy scripting: You enter a room and the NPCs keep still for hours if you wait just after the door step. They only move once you get close enough. No real life in them. And after interactions (of whatever sort) they often just keep staying there in their last pose of your little “talk”. Looks funny but leaves a miserable impression.

Poor Duke... Really deserved a better ending...

    Heres whats wrong with it
Two weapons at a time. The idea of duke is for him to be a badass mofo who can use ANY gun at ANY time. You always know when a boss is near because the game GIVES you the weapons that it thinks you are goin to need. Giving you only 2 weapons in a duke game is crazy.
Too much scripted events (not a bad thing generally but in this they are crap) sitting thru the same things OVER and OVER if you die.
Regen Health. WHY? and its so random some times you screen flashes red and you take a load more bullets. Others you get hit once and die????
Stick any Character apart from duke and this would be generic rubbish.

But god the one liners still rule

Played a fair chunk of it now. Can't say that I'm impressed. It feels like a game primarily released for the fans, of which there are, thankfully, many.

Once I take over the world, games will be better...

its worth mentioning that we are all probs harsher on the game then any other becuase of the 12 years of production. it could be the best game ever made but we wouldnt see it due to the fact that the production time.

that been said any other studio could have made dnf in 2 years easy but ya.

meh never liked the "duke" character. just thought it was completely lame and "trying too hard". as for the game, not to impressive from what i've seen. i don't even like shooters to begin with. not since Golden Eye or the first HALO. after that the FPS genre exploded and it dulled them out big time.

Freaking loved it back in the day. I think the game's pretty good so far. The shit in the toilet is funny as hell.
The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.

I've now beaten the game and I'm happy with the final product. It's a solid game despite the somewhat unpolished surface. Enemies, weapons, bosses, Duke's one-liners and the occasional setpieces are always fun. Finding ways to boost Duke's ego is great fun too.

The game has its fair share of issues although it deserves better scores than it's getting. I mean the latest Brofist of Duty: Modern Company 5 always gets great-to-awesome reviews despite the linearity, QTE and other gameplay moments that DNF gets flacked for. It's kinda strange. The regenerating health shouldn't have been there though. The game isn't built for the duck-and-cover gameplay that such a health system forces upon the player and thus some battles are really frustrating.

Hopefully after acquiring the rights to the franchise Gearbox can make the next Duke game, with the feedback they get from this game, in shorter time and on a more up-to-date engine. And as far, far, far, far, far away from George Broussard as possible.
