Unopened would be a fair bit rarer, though. I still have my gold cart edition, complete in the box, but the box has... definitely seen better days. A quick look on eBay.ca only shows five auctions for gold carts available at the moment, and only one of those is complete -- although the seller is a bit of an idiot, thinking he can get 990 euros for it. The rest just have the cart, and are averaging around $40.

Not sure what's up on eBay.com, since I never go there... get disappointed too much when I find out they don't ship to Canada.

I get a little sad every time I see the US version of Donkey Kong 64 because the cart's yellow. The PAL version is in a standard grey cart and it's so ugly. I want the yellow one.

I get sad every time I go looking for NES games, then realize that I don't have any money to buy them.

There's a difference between rarity and desire. Zelda gold carts are a dime a dozen, but so many people demand it that the price has risen to a respectable amount. Just like FFVII, that game is incredibly common, but it holds a $80 price tag just because people want to pay it.

Sealed copies are sort of a gamble. They are very easy to fabricate, since they should never be opened. A legit sealed copy of OoT? Fairly common for sealed games. But still pretty uncommon in the wild.

Banjo Tooie also goes for some insane amounts of money, I paid £8 for it, cart only.

Mystical Ninja goes for £25+? I had that in the 90s, multiple times actually.
That's why I've hung on to my carts. I still have boxes for most...somewhere. I just don't know where.

    Oh, PAL. It ruins everything.

You'll need an expansion pack as well, that's if you haven't already.

Not knowing where they are is about as good as not having the boxes in the first place.

No, I don't have one yet. I plan to get it with Donkey Kong 64 boxed, I plan to own the expansion pack + DK64 anyway so might as well get them both together.

My Dad bought me Harvest Moon sealed back when it first came out. I thought to myself, "Farming? The hell is this?" so I never opened it. Now it will go on eBay for easily $1000.

They're somewhere in my built in wardrobe...I'll be damned if I'm dragging all that shite out to find them.

Excellent choice, that game is amazing.

Oh, I'm not discounting the fact that there are lots out there, just that there are lots out there and the demand for them is higher than for most other games. I paid an arm and a leg for certain games when I was collecting NES games in the box, and they really aren't worth the money that I put into them -- however, the rarity of them as well as the desire by many to complete their NES collections has driven the prices through the roof, especially since, other than emulation, there is no way to get those games anymore. With Ocarina of Time, there are so many rereleases out there (GCN collectable disc, Wii download, rerelease for the 3DS) that it drives the price down a little bit. But people are still willing to pay extra dime for the original.

The same thing happened to my copy of Mega Man 5. I paid just over $100 for it, mint in the box (the corners of the box aren't even frayed, it looks like someone had just taken it out of the cellophane). As soon as the Mega Man Anniversary Collection came out, average price for complete in box copies of MM5 dropped about $30. They have started to slowly climb back up again now, but not nearly as much. When I paid $100 for my copy, I still managed to get it at a steal -- I saw similar copies in slightly worse condition going for $130-$140.

Yeah, it was easily in my top 10 favourite N64 games. So hard though later on. Never finished it.

    Bastard.

I still have my copy around here somewhere, but it's just the cart. Picked it up at a pawn shop a couple of years ago for $20.
