No, sonic is not back...sadly Sonic never ceased to be published. It looks to me like an updated sonic 1...as if that has never been done before. Probably the same concept as the recent Mario Anniversary, which was a 35 MB Wii game. I compared it to my SNES version of Mario All Stars and there were no noticeable changes.
Jazz, I think that's its an update of the genesis games with improved graphics and gameplay control issues (well every new Sonic game has them, don't they?), but if they release this for Wii i might be interested, but i might just stay with my original Genesis copies.
I'm going to remain skeptically optimistic. It looks really nice, but I can already see where classic Sonic physics are flawed. Most notably in terms of movement on the ground. While it seems they fixed the floatyness of Sonic 4's jump and aerial physics, it's still appears to be plagued by the same cruddy ground movement restraints. Too much friction. And I'm surprised no one ever brings up the fact that Sonic doesn't "slide" to a stop the way he does in S1-3K. It's the acceleration and deceleration mechanics that have always annoyed me to no end in recent games.
As for modern Sonic, looks like it's gonna play the same as Unleashed and Colors. However, I did notice that modern Sonic can roll again. I'm hoping they replaced the "Boost" button with the "Roll/Spindash" button.
And Jazz:
Mario Anniversary was Super Mario All-Stars on an emulator. 4MB out of that 35MB was, in fact, an SNES rom. The rest was the emulator code and the Wii intro and disc graphics and sound file.
Also, the changes and gimmicks are one of the things Classic Sonic fans hate about the newer games. They want Sega to go back to the original formula.
Edit:
From what I can tell, the level design, while reminiscent of classic Green Hill Zone, appears to be very different. I highly doubt it's gonna be just a facelift of Sonic 1.

The first Sonic I ever played was Sonic The Hedgehog for the Master System. For me, it was better then Mario, and I wanted a Mega Drive (Genesis) to play the other sonics, but my father only bought Sonic Blast. I played the modern 3D Sonics, and liked it. It seems this new game will be awesome! Play in 2D levels as classic Sonic or 3D levels as modern Sonic. Hell, I have to buy an XBOX 360 or PS3, or I'll never be able to play this game.
I've been burned too many times by sonic games after adventure 2 to wait and see the general opinion on this, it slipped under my radar and rightly so as every sonic game so far has disappointed me since SA2 some was better than others but on the whole its been Mediocre (Sonic Colors, Shadow the Hedgehog) to just face palming (Sonic the Hedgehog 360)
Unleashed is in my Meh Pile, one of the better attempts but ya still not quite right... then again will sonic fans ever be satisfied? thats the other factor I think hasnt been thought about much... we as older sonic players have this idea in our heads of what we think the 3D Sonic or 2D sonic should be like and when we dont get it were harder on the game maybe we should be? I of corse cant speak for anyone but myself but ill admit im harder on sonic games ever since Sonic Adventure 2 and the follow ups from that. Maybe as sonic fans we will never be happy regardless of sega's efforts... or maybe they have lost so much touch with there fan base and there floundering like a fish trying to find a formula that works for most players.
That been said I think they should Give Sumo Digital a shot at it, I don't think they have had a crack at a sonic platform game and they did a very decent job of Sonic and Sega All Star Racing, this coming from an owner of the more gimped PC version, or maybe take the Valve approach and bring in some of the modding community's talents like Valve did with Counter Strike, Left 4 Dead and Portal.
This is however all my own personal thoughts and opinion on this.
No! NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I spend YEARS fighting off that blasted rodent, and now there's TWO of the bastards!? That's IT. The Egg Carrier AND Death Egg are re-launching as we bloody well speak! For I am Dr. Robotnik, the greatest scientific genius in the WORLD! Never mind previous defeats. I WILL crush Sonic! Both of them if I have to!
One day SEGA will make ME the hero...
But until that day, I will fight and take over the world!

Now that my alter ego's stepped down, allow me to provide a slightly more serious review of the given information.
This looks awesome. However, Sega's been quite good at making their new Sonic games LOOK awesome, and then play like a controller made of toffee. Unleashed was a good example of that. While it had its redeeming features, the day-time levels were so fast you had to have reverse reaction times - i.e. respond back in time - and while the gameplay wasn't too bad, the werehog concept was completely bloody insane. Colours did a lot of things right, though I still feel the levels rushed a bit too fast.
Frankly, this game looks like it has a great deal of potential, and I would love to see how the 'dual sonic' gameplay works out.
Now, of course, I'm wondering if there are also two Robotniks in this game - classic and modern. Hells, if you add in all the Robotniks the series has had, the two sonics will be up against about 6, I think. Classic, Archie, Underground, Modern, Sonic 2006, AoStH...
Okay, let's discard comic/cartoon canon. That's still 3 Robotniks. I see possibilities here...
If you need me, I'll be in my temporal displacement chamber.

Now that that's out of the way, this looks promising.
It looks kind of cool, but I dunno 'bout it...
