My father has nightmares about the Dr. Mario music.

And I'm not lying. He seriously does. My mother would kick his ass at that game. They would play versus, and he would set his stage up to Level 5, and she would set hers up to Level 20, and she would destroy him.

Your mom is a bitchin gamer, my friend. The only thing my mom can kick my ass at is... nothing, and my dad can kick my ass at Pac-man, Tetris(he showed me him beating level 9), mario, Gradius, Metal Gear... I envy my dad`s gaming skill.

Provided that the parent is monitoring what they are saying/doing, you have to give kids a little bit of freedom when it comes to that kind of stuff, and let them find out what is appropriate/inappropriate. It's not "can vs cannot," it's "okay, but I'm going to be paying attention to what you're saying/playing, and if I don't like what I am hearing/seeing, then that shit is going to stop."

The worst thing that you can do is outright forbid your kids from doing anything. You have to allow them certain freedoms that are appropriate for their age range, and take into account just how connected everything in the world is now, and take into account that the kids growing up these days have access to millions of things that even I didn't have access to when I was a kid. And I'm only 23.
It was Minecraft which is completely appropriate for a 10 year old.

Well, except for the fact that the occasional griefer may destroy his structure.

My mom hasn't played games since the NES. She gets motion sick really easily and can't even watch us play games. However, she used to rock the shit out of Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Legend of Zelda, Dr. Mario, and Kirby's Adventure. She loved Super Mario Bros. 3, but couldn't beat it by herself. Her and I used to tag team the game -- she could make it to World 8, but had a lot of trouble with a couple of the levels, and I could rarely make it to World 8 but knew how to beat most of those levels.

So my mother would play through Worlds 1-7 (letting me play the occasional level), then hand the controller to me for the last couple of levels of World 8, and we would rock that shit out.

My dad stopped playing video games around 1997. He was halfway through Super Mario 64, but he got so busy at work he just didn't have time anymore, and never got back into it. He was really good at sports games, though.

Agreed. I can understand the shock of having someone half your age on there, though.

It's like when I come into the Hang Out and realize there is someone here who is about ten years younger than I am.

It`s terrible. It`s at the point where I`m about ready to hack my Wii to get a fan translation running on it. I don`t even know whether to call it Monando or Xenoblade, since the TBA is still Monando: Beginning of the world. All I know is that they better be doing something fucking spectacular to it. But enough of my butthurt rant, how goes it?

I realized after I posted it that I fucked that up. I had already changed it, but apparently not before you managed to trap it forever in the confines of a quote box.

I'm gonna go watch my hockey game now, though. Oilers are actually playing half decent, even though they were finished this season about two months ago.
