Stories are hard to continue, or make very interesting anyways, when all the characters die.

I'll watch a movie where everyone dies, but that's because it's not a 6+ hour long movie about all the characters dying.

I knew after about 3 episodes (thanks to looking at certain pertinent info) what it was going to become. I thoroughly enjoyed it regardless.

(also, why the hell would you want to continue a story? Stories are supposed to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. That's it. Sequels are stupid. Plus, considering the writing staff, I wouldn't hedge any bets on a sequel. He wrote a grand total of one sequel. It ends with all of creation imploding. Needless to say, it didn't become a trilogy.)
