What is the best minimalistic operating system that will run up to ps2 and game cube emulators and games?

Im sure emu's that play PS2 and GC are available for every OS, but you will need higher-end hardware.

It depends of the game you are trying to emulate. For example, PS2 Mystic Heroes isnt a game that requires a very high end computer, while God of War is a game that requires a high end computer.

As already mentioned, no matter how minimalistic your OS, you're still limited by the hardware. The PS2 emulators probably won't run well without a minimum of a 3Ghz or higher hyper-threading, or a 2Ghz multi-core, main processor. You'll also probably need a minimum of about 1GB main system ram, and 512MB graphics card/chip output. If the graphics is an integrated chip with shared RAM, you'll need even more main system ram.

But...if you are trying to squeeze the last ounce of performance out of your hardware, and you need an OS with full support for modern software. I'd go with an optimized Windows XP, or something like Arch Linux.

Overall, you still need a PC with good specs to emulates both PS2 & NGC emulators, it would be best to read this faq for details about the minimum requirement that required to emulate PS2 emulator, which is PCSX2, and you could also use it for the NGC emulator, Dolphin as well.
