Yeah, my only complaint about Haggard is that despite their frequent use of a variety of classical instruments,
they don't really seem to do much w/ them in their music. Like specifically, not every song needs a dramatic piano interlude.
I listened to this one band Therion, but I'm not really impressed with it.

But yeah, I was pleased enough with Tales of Itheria, it's just a shame that they don't do more, suffice to say.

Skiltron and Equilibrium are good, Tyr, Skyforger, and Yggdrasil are as well but have much heavier folk elements.

Haggard are pretty close to unique. The only equivalent I can think of is Profanum and thats one hell of a stretch (Profanum dropped all the metal instrumentation halfway through their career and continued to make stuff that was either metal songwriting with classical instrumentation or just outright aping of classical music, depending on the track).

For different folk metal, maybe take a look at Darkestrah. More black/folk than anything else but its genuine non-western folk elements.

yeah I get picky when it comes to Black Metal influence.. like the lead singer can either make it or break it for me.
I'd actually listened to Equilibrium once in the past & couldn't get over the guys voice.
I can do Dimmu Borgir just fine though. & for Haggard, I just love it.
I can't seem to do Profanum either though..

Darkestrah I could get into. Totally digging Skiltron (Argentinian Celtic? Who knew?)

What's that metal where the lead "singer" is screaming like the devil while random instruments are being hit?

    I don't like that metal.

Death metal? Could be black metal? Quite a few bands that don't tend to go by that label do that as well

It's pretty far from random. Your inability to discern technical proficiency does you no credit.

And screaming is basically not used in metal. Damn near every other vocal trick in the book is but for some reason its never caught on.

Screaming requires no vocal skill and that's why you see it in all the 'core' and wannabe death metal bands. I really dislike black metal; it certainly outweighs genres like core this or core that and nu. Heavy, speed, and power, and all of their sub-genres and combinations, are my favorites.

not a fan of the nu metal, although I'd probably be more open to it were it not so god damn popular on the radio out here & on MTV.

I can tolerate screaming in mild amounts, generally so long as I can determine what is actually being said lyrically.
Haggard, I can understand what is being sung amidst the deep growls.
Turisas was sort of difficult at first, though not all their music incorporates screaming in excess.
In fact that makes up a comparatively small portion of the songs as a whole.

Blind Guardian.. now there's a good metal band

& it's come to my attention that I have not heard nearly enough Death Metal bands

Only ones that come to mind are Dethklok & (pre-symphonic metal) Haggard

Then you've never really heard Death Metal, I guess.

I barely count them as a band, let alone metal. I really don't have much death metal on my computer so I can't really suggest any. Random suggestion time, Excalion has some powerful vocals, listen to The Wingman sometime.

Same, it's why I can actually enjoy Unearth and Static X. Sometimes.
