It works well when I'm going for a "holy shit, what?" effect when invading other players. I like to wear unusual armor, occasionally cast an invisibility spell and drag a hilariously oversized weapon around to complete the ensemble.
The Northern Regalia is good if you aren't completely opposed to 2H weapons. It's surprisingly fast especially when used 2 handed, and it's exceptionally powerful. Who needs defense when you send enemies flying? Aside from that, I've been quite fond of my upgraded falchion collection and either the moonlight sword or the smaller version of it (since they weight almost nothing, they're extremely fast, they ignore defense, and they're essentially magic lightsabers). The King's Field reference just sweetens the deal.
I wonder how many things still have that affect. I would assume that the game has been around long enough for most of the experienced player to have seen all there is to see at this point. If I get around to invading people, I'll probably lament the fact that I didn't start earlier, and I'll probably run into a ton of people who are dramatically more skilled than I am. It's so annoying to begin feeling confident about a game until you start playing online.
I don't particularly mind two handed weapons, but they usually just don't fit in with my usual preferences for playing style. Generally, I'll take light and fast over heavy and powerful any day. Demon's Souls, however, seems to be an ideal example of a game that occasionally requires compromise.

Don't know, I haven't touched in it a while and I've milked the bulk of the fun out. But I'm sure there's plenty of late adopters around who waited for a price drop. Once a game hits half price or goes on sale, there's always a good influx to the online modes.
Not really, you can use magic to cover a lot of the bases you'd use 2H weapons for. I just find them fun. Plus there's something strangely pleasing about watching your character wail on enemies with a sword that's almost his size.
