Hopefully by the time I get a slim there will be something similar to JTAG available. A man can dream, can't he?

You might be better off with a PS3 then. There is never going to be anything similar to the JTAG, nor is there going to be a way to downgrade.

At least all PS3s can run unsigned code now.

JTAGs are great, but they're all going to be fucked eventually, you can only re-ball the motherboard so many times before it stops working completely.
