In the movie titled "World Trade Center" not much is touched upon in the sense of what actually happened that day. But instead the film focuses on the survival and rescue of 2 Port Authority Police Men. A very decieving title indeed, much more could have been done to properly convey the overall happenings of that day for the general movie going public. As per a film release the most dramatic rescue be displayed in this venture by Oliver Stone and company.
The movie focuses in the least bit on the attacks of the WTC towers but mainly on , only once referencing them making it seem as though they are ordering you to believe that only one boeing jet was culprit for the entire WTC crash incidents. The question begs, How does one's jet eject from a crash into a structure liek the WTC tower? This is never answered. It is clearly known that there were 2 jets hijacked then flown into a tower each. Tower one was hit by AA Flight 11 at 8:46 am and tower 2 was hit at 9:03 am by UA Flight 175, it's not clearly made which flight in the movie is blamed for both crashes. Furthermore, they say a bomb hit the Pentagon, which is clearly and ode to conspiracy theorists around the world. Nor what is discussed is who was responsible or how the crashes happened.
Another anomoly in this film is the depiction of Dave Karnes motive to reach New York and lend a hand in the rescue effort. Dave Karnes abandoned his job as an accountant then drove from Connecticut to the World Trade Center soon after seeing the crashes on the news. Slate magazine wrote about this somewhat disrespectful portrayal of Karnes, "The film seems to overplay his zeal without conveying his motivations and reasoning," and that he is unfairly portrayed as "a robotic soldier of Christ —a little wacky and simplistic."
Ergo, to follow the rule of thumb for hollywood, if you ruin one role in a historical film, with or without prior knowledge, you might as well ruin them all. Well, not really. But, they do shoot and miss on the other U.S. Marine Rescuer. One, Jason Thomas. Jason Thomas is not only misrepresented by race, but also by name. Referred to once the on the DVD commentary as Mike Thomas by the Director Oliver Stone. When searching together with Karnes he identified himslf only as "Sergeant Thomas", for the producers this was an incompleteness that they felt could be easily solved by casting the white actor William Mapother to portray him. Thomas is in reality African-American, he did not know he was featured in this film until he was a tv advertisment. In the producer's defense did try to contact Thomas, these attempts were unsucessful.
Overall it is a nice dramatic portyal of 2 of the only 20 survivors rescued, numbers 18 and 19 as the post-script of the film so displays. Many critcs of the film say they were lead on about having Oliver Stone direct a 9/11 film. Thinking that it would shed light upon the current discussions of WHO DUN ITs and support some type of conspiracy theory or atleast mention them in the least bit. But alas it is only is for the drama that this movie is worth to watch. Barely historical at all aside from the focused events happening on a dark day in America.
