I played this guy for a whole hour, trying different tactics and even button mashing (which I never do). Nothing works.

There were seven, the central two being the twin towers themselves. (WTC buildings 1 and 2). They were the only ones directly hit, but the rubble and destruction from them ruined most of the other buildings.

About the buildings, from wikipedia:
All seven original buildings in the complex were destroyed by terrorists linked to Al-Qaeda[5] on September 11, 2001. Three of the buildings collapsed: One World Trade Center (1 WTC, the North Tower), Two World Trade Center (2 WTC, the South Tower), and 7 World Trade Center (7 WTC). The Marriott World Trade Center (3 WTC) was crushed by the collapses of 1 WTC and 2 WTC. 4 World Trade Center (4 WTC), 5 World Trade Center (5 WTC), and 6 World Trade Center (6 WTC) were damaged beyond repair and later demolished. Two buildings not part of the complex were also destroyed: St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was destroyed by the collapse of 2 WTC, and the Deutsche Bank Building was damaged beyond repair and is currently being deconstructed.

There were actually 7 WTC buildings. The two towers (WTC 1, the north tower and WTC2, the south tower) which were initially hit, two smaller high-rises (WTC 3 and 7) and 3 low-rise buildings (WTC 4,5,6).
WTC 1 and 2 took the initial hits, but debris from the impacts severly damaged WTC7 and lead to its collapse. WTC 3 was crushed by debris from the collapse of WTC 1 and 2. WTC 4-6 took a fair amount of secondary damage from debris but remained standing. They were later declared too severely damaged for repair and were demolished.
