Well, he could have been using counterfeit battery. They've been known to do the same thing in cell phones.
Most likely a counterfeit battery as Panda has said. I also believe that the article misquotes the Sony website, "Using batteries with such protective devices may cause a failure or an accident." It should probably say, "Using batterries withOUT." I can't check because my work filters block the playstation site.

A teacher was able to get the device out of the classroom, but Bauman did not know if the teacher had to pull the PSP from the boy's front pocket. She refuted media reports that the PSP caught fire or exploded.
"There was no fire," she said. "There was no explosion."
Last time I checked you couldn't fit a PS1 down your pocket... this woman needs hooked on common sense for teachers."At about 8:30 a.m., a student had an electronic device, a Sony PlayStation in his pants pocket, and it overheated, causing his leg to get hot," said Bauman.
Your supposed to stop drop and roll when you are fire, not when something is burning in your pocket, what a dumbass.
Yeah and the crack finally started to leak acid. But in terms of acid you don't stop drop and roll for acid. Poor kid only further damaged his PSP from repair with the rolling.
Stay away from used PSP on ebay from Farmington Hills, Michigan.
--EDIT--
No, the PSP that needs repairs in my sig is NOT this one. I got this out of Logansport, IN
Burnout. Now that's just bullshit.
