Yup. The lid spring isn't very strong; just enough to get it open enough for you to pull it ALL the way by yourself.

It's a safety measure; Nintendo had several bodily harm lawsuits when their Wii components hurt people, so Sony foresaw that with the PS2 (way earlier, of course) to avoid bodily harm lawsuits from retards getting broken noses from their PS2 lid.
